March 2016: IDC released a quarterly update to their Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, citing market share figures for the 4th calendar quarter of 2015 (4Q15).

Consider these telling facts:

Fact 1: Hewlett Packard Enterprise continues to lead in the worldwide server market by revenue. HPE is the undisputed #1 in worldwide revenue for the 8th consecutive quarter.

The gap with #2, Dell was 8.2 percentage points.

For the full calendar year 2015 (CY2015), HPE was also #1 in worldwide revenue growing at a rate of 5.8% when compared to the previous full year.


Fact 2: For nearly 14 consecutive years, 55 straight quarters, HPE is the #1 vendor in worldwide server shipments.

HPE shipped a server every 13.4 seconds in 4CQ15 (24x7) and shipped nearly 1 in every 4 servers worldwide in 4CQ15.

For the full CY2015, HPE was also #1 in server shipments with over 2,350,000 units shipped. In the year HPE shipped 331,000 more servers than #2 Dell, 1,400,000 more than #3 Lenovo and 2,000,000 more than Cisco.


Fact 3: HPE leads the total Blade server market with a #1 position in both revenue and units.

HPE has led the Blade server market in revenue and units for more than 9 years straight, 37 consecutive quarters. HPE has 13.8 percentage points more blades revenue share than #2, Cisco.


Fact 4: HPE is again #1 in Density Optimized servers.

HPE grew revenue in density optimized servers by 63.4% year over year which more than 2X the market rate, gaining 5.0 percentage points during this time. #2 Dell lost -1.4 percentage points of density optimized revenue share year over year.

For the full CY2015, HPE was also #1 in worldwide density optimized revenue growing at a rate of 89.6% gaining 8.3 percentage points of share when compared to the previous full year. In CY2015 HPE gained more density optimized revenue than the other top 3 competitors, Dell, IBM and Lenovo combined. HPE also gained more revenue for this segment than the ODM category when compare to CY2014.


Fact 5: HPE leads in combined Density Optimized and Blade servers.

HPE is #1 in revenue market share with 35.1% which is 2X the closest competitor, Cisco. This segment is identified by IDC as a significant and growing market driven by demand in public cloud hyperscale environments, as well as private cloud and integrated systems. 1


Fact 6: HPE ProLiant is the x86 server market share leader in both revenue and units for 79 consecutive quarters, more than 19.5 consecutive years. [2]

Sustained market leadership is a hallmark of HPE ProLiant innovation. HPE’s #1 position for revenue share, 29.0%, is 8.5 points higher than #2 Dell and 19.9 percentage points more than #3 Lenovo.


Fact 7: HPE leads in EPIC+RISC Blade server revenue.

HPE Integrity blades maintained the number one position in revenue for the RISC+EPIC blade segment with 84.5% worldwide share, gaining 5.1 percentage points year over year.


Fact 8: HPE is #1 in Windows® revenue and units worldwide.

HPE has a 35.1% revenue share of the Windows market and leads the nearest competitor, Dell, by 9.4 percentage points.


Fact 9: HPE is #1 in Linux® revenue and units worldwide.

HPE has a 19.4% revenue share of the Linux market and leads the nearest competitor, Dell, by 6.7 percentage points.


Fact 10: For the 3 major operating environments UNIX, Windows and Linux combined (representing 99.9% of all servers shipped worldwide), HPE is number 1 worldwide in server revenue and unit shipments.
