  • Good Hardware, Bad Software

Have owned a G4010 for about 3 years. Hardware has been reliable throughout. Software and support is another story. Recently upgraded to a 64 bit Win7 machine and downloaded new drivers and software for my G4010. New software ver 13.0 is the only compatible software but HP have removed one of the key features of the old software ver8.0. That is the save profiles feature. Now if you are scanning many images and want the same dimensions, scale, resolution, light/dark, sharpening you have to set up each image individually! A complete timewaster. And their old ver. 8 software is not compatible with Win7.

At first I used the CD supplied to install the software. I also checked the web-site for updates. What was a bit confusing was the change in the names and numbering between the software on the CD and web-site. So I went by release date. So I uninstalled the CD software and installed just the drivers for the scanner, everything works fine. Both the drivers and the ancillary software worked fine. I just need to scan. Everything else can be done using software that I already own in professional versions.

I am running Windows 7 64bit. Purchased the scanner this week. Ignored the software / driver installation disks supplied with the scanner which are for earlier OS. Downloaded the latest software and drivers from the HP site. Scanner and support software working well with no problems. Fully satisfied with the product.

This scanner worked well with Vista operating system but does not work well with Windows 7. You can only scan one way in Windows 7. All the buttons on the top do all the same thing. I wished HP would come across with upgrading the software for their products. If they don't soon, I will go out and purchase a new scanner that will do what I want and I assure you it won't be HP this time, unless they come across with software upgrade soon for this product. I just don't want to scan in photo format.

This is a fine product. If you take time to really read the instructions and if you follow them, keep up with the software releases and understand the process, this scanner, barring any physical malfuntion/damage, will perform well. I scan just about everything this unit is designed to scan, with no problems. One thing you must recognize is that if you choose to use the energy / bulb saving fieatures, you MUST allow the scanner to "wake up" before it is usable. If you don't have the patience for that or you use it all day long, you can choose to leave the unit in a ready state. It should come on immediately and your on your way. Of course your bulb life-cycle may be diminshed somewhat. I have had my G4010 for more than a year and a half and have never had any problems, even with Vista...remember, it's up to YOU to update your drivers. Keep the glass clean :^) and happy scanning.
