HP Enables Unified Communications For The University of Namur

Belgian university streamlines network with innovative HP technology

NAMUR, Belgium, 12 September 2012 - HP announced today that the University of Namur has improved the performance and availability of its media-rich education applications while reducing costs with HP Networking.

The university delivers academic programs that ensure its 6,000 students and almost 950 researchers contribute responsibly and usefully to society. The main campus in Namur includes the university building, libraries and 60 laboratories and research centres.

“We needed to streamline the university’s communications network and link one large aggregation point and one data center on the university campus, including a supercomputing infrastructure” says Bruno Delcourt, network team leader, University of Namur. “The HP solution achieves this simply and effectively, giving us a platform that enables new applications like voice over IP, unified communications and collaboration (UC&C), mobility and video. As well as being easy to use, the HP network significantly reduces our IT costs.”

HP Network Consulting Services retained the university’s simple, flattened network topology, which now delivers ultra-high resiliency and maximum availability. For maximum efficiency, the network is centrally managed with HP Intelligent Management Center (IMC) software, an administrative tool providing single pane-of-glass management of all HP and third-party platforms. HP IMC unifies the management of network resources, devices, services and users, easing the workload on the university’s IT team and lowering operating expenses.

Powerful HP 10500 Switch Series support the University of Namur’s media-rich UC&C, video and distance learning applications. Two HP 10500 switches in the data center and two at the aggregation point enable the university to span two physical locations. HP’s innovative Intelligent Resilient Framework (IRF) technology consolidates these devices into a single, easy-to-manage virtual switch, reducing the university’s infrastructure complexity, increasing network reliability and ensuring that critical applications and services run without interruption.

At the access layer, energy-efficient HP 5120 El Switch Series with the latest traffic prioritisation technologies ensure secure, resilient core-to-edge connectivity. The whole network is easily scalable to accommodate the university’s future needs.

The system was implemented by HP ServiceOne partner Prodata with consultancy and technical support from HP Network Consulting Services. To ensure the highest levels of reliability, the network will be supported by Prodata for the next six years.

“Universities and research institutions need powerful, flexible networks to support bandwidth-hungry rich media applications like video,” says Gunther Van Audenhove.”HP Networking provides a future-ready platform for the University of Namur’s changing IT needs. In addition, HP’s open standards philosophy is perfectly in line with the customer’s vision.”

HP’s premier Europe, Middle East and Africa client event, HP Discover, takes place Dec. 4-6 in Frankfurt, Germany.
