Planet Partners Return & Recycling Program
The HP Planet Partners Return & Recycling Program is available in 73 countries and territories worldwide. To date, HP customers worldwide have recycled more than 2.8 billion pounds of hardware & supplies1. Through this and other efforts, HP aims to recycle 3.5 billion pounds of electronic products and supplies by the end of 20152.
What happens when you return an HP print cartridge or any brand of computing hardware for recycling? HP uses state-of-the-art recycling facilities to process each return through a multi-phase recycling process. No HP print cartridges returned and recycled through Planet Partners are sent to landfill.

HP "Closed Loop" ink cartridge recycling
The HP "Closed Loop" ink cartridge recycling process is an award-winning process that has its roots here in Canada and is developed through a close collaboration between HP and an expert Canadian plastics recycler, the Lavergne group.
Using recycled materials saves energy, avoids waste, supports the recycling infrastructure, and keeps plastic out of landfills. Although achieving consistent quality and reliability can be difficult with recycled plastics, HP's engineers, chemists, and partners developed recycled resins that meet HP's high performance standards.
In 2013 this process was recognized as one of the Top 15 sustainability projects in Canada by Delta Management Group. In addition, at the Clean 50 Summit in September 2013, the program was tied for the Clean 50 Honourees Choice.
HP's leadership with "closed loop" plastics recycling for ink cartridges began in 2005 with our recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) initiative. RPET plastic from this process has a 33% lower carbon footprint and 89% lower water footprint in its production than new (virgin) plastic—even when accounting for the environmental impact associated with collecting, transporting, and processing used cartridges and plastic bottles3. Manufacturing Original HP ink cartridges with recycled plastic instead of virgin plastic reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 6,900 tonnes in 2013—equivalent to taking 1,455 cars off the road for one year.4
We have built on this success with a second "closed loop" plastics initiative involving recycled polypropylene (RPP)—polypropylene is used in a significant percentage of HP's inkjet supplies. The RPP program combined with the existing RPET initiative has led to more than 75% of our Original HP ink cartridges containing recycled plastic. In addition, 24% of HP LaserJet toner cartridges contain recycled plastic.5
As of the end of January 2014, we have manufactured more than 2 billion Original HP ink and toner cartridges using more than 62,000 tonnes of recycled content material.6 Through this process, HP has contributed to the "circular economy" by keeping 566 million cartridges, 498 tonnes of polypropylene hangers, and 2.5 billion postconsumer plastic bottles out of landfills.7
