December 2012: IDC released a quarterly update to their Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, citing market share figures for the 3rd calendar quarter of 2012 (3Q12).

Consider these telling facts:

Fact 1: For more than 10 consecutive years, 42 straight quarters, HP is the #1 vendor in worldwide server shipments with a 30.4% total unit shipment share.

HP shipped more than 634,000 servers in 3Q12 which was 70,000 more servers than Dell, 2.2 times as many servers as IBM, 8.3 times as Fujitsu, 11.2 times as many as Cisco and 29.7 times as many as Oracle.

HP shipped a server every 12 seconds in 3Q12 (24x7).

 

Fact 2: HP has a commanding lead in the total blade server market, with a 45.9% revenue share. HP has led the blade server market for 24 consecutive quarters; 6 years.

HP shipped 2.2 times as many blades as IBM, 3.0 times as many as Cisco and 4.4 times as many as Dell.

 

Fact 3: For 16+ consecutive years, 66 quarters, HP ProLiant is the x86 server market share leader in both factory revenue and units 1.

HP’s x86 revenue share, 32.0%, was 8.6 percentage points higher than its nearest competitor Dell and 15.5 percentage points higher than IBM and 27.3 percentage points higher than Cisco.

 

Fact 4: HP was #1 in UNIX volume server unit shipments with 31.7% market share.

HP gained 7.5 points of volume UNIX unit share year-over-year.

 

Fact 5: HP is #1 in Windows® revenue and units worldwide.

HP has a commanding 34.4% revenue share of the Windows market and leads over the nearest competitor, Dell, by 9.0 percentage points.

 

Fact 6: HP is #1 in Linux® revenue, 26.3%, and units, 26.6%

In terms of Linux revenue share HP leads its nearest competitor IBM by 6.6 percentage points and Dell by 7.3 points.

 

Fact 7: For the three major operating environments UNIX, Windows and Linux combined (representing 99.9% of all servers shipped worldwide), HP is number one worldwide in server unit shipments and revenue.

HP holds a 30.4% unit market share worldwide, which is 3.3 percentage points higher than #2 Dell.
