HP Indigo Digital labels open house event in Barcelona.

A two-day open house event in Barcelona introduced prospective customers and selected EMEA journalists to the opportunities and successes of digital label printing.

The event, which involved about 80 people, included presentations, visits to two local customers and opportunities for business and social discussions. Attendees came from more than a dozen countries, from the UK to Russia.

Presentations included:

  • "The Present and Future of Digital Printing" - Enric Martinez-Abarca, industrial business manager
  • "More Than Just a Printing Device" - Danny Dams, industrial product manager
  • "Label Business Analysis" - Syd Roberts, business consultant, industrial products, EMEA

Visits and presentations to two customers provided real-world support for the proposition of the HP presentations. Germark and Boronatic are both HP Indigo press users in the Barcelona area. Germark is a market-leading label printer with 125 employees operating ten conventional presses and an HP Indigo press ws4050. Iban Cid, president of Germark, explained how having a digital capability complemented its conventional work and made short-runs and fast-turnarounds not only possible, but profitable.

Germark also operates an "Etiqueta Express" service that provides 48-hour delivery of up to 28,000 labels.

By contrast, and to demonstrate that smaller companies can operate digital presses profitably, Boronatic has one conventional press and an HP Indigo press ws4500. Rosa Cuenca, Boronatic's general manager, says that 85 percent of the company's business is short-run production, with 65 percent of its production produced digitally. Despite its size, Boronatic prints food, wine and pharmaceuticals labels for high-profile national and international brands.

Tours and demonstrations in HP's Customer Care Centre, in San Cugat, gave attendees the opportunity to inspect closely prepress, press and finishing solutions as well as a wide range of samples.
