Better apps: 4 keys to ‘lifecycle virtualization’

Better, faster, more efficient: Here’s how software dev teams can start to exceed ever-increasing expectations.

More than ever, organizations are challenged with how to get to market faster, increase the value of their brand, increase customer attraction and retention, and reduce costs.
Increasingly, organizations are turning to virtualization to overcome these challenges, and HP is helping these organizations by delivering results to the market and to customers through an approach we call “lifecycle virtualization.”
The lifecycle virtualization approach addresses four virtualization pillars—the four legs of the lifecycle virtualization table, so to speak:

  1. User virtualization
  2. Service virtualization
  3. Network virtualization
  4. Data virtualization

I’ve seen customers deliver compelling results by leveraging these capabilities:

  • A global 500 bank reduced performance incidents by more than 70 percent.
  • A large enterprise financial services company reduced testing time and accelerated application delivery by 30 to 40 percent.
  • A computer software company improved application performance and response time by 51 to 70 percent.

Getting started

Applications leaders will see the opportunity to show great value to their technology and business teams—not to mention to the end customer. Certainly your line of business leaders and the C suite will want to see this kind of value realized.

I find that many people relate to the idea of “virtual users” and quickly understand the value of virtualization for functional, performance, and security testing. Building from that, you can work on the highest-value capabilities that provide the fastest results. I’ve found that a combination of virtual services and virtual networks, focused on the most frequently used transactions and backend services, can deliver compelling results within 30 days.

Middle stages

As you begin to build the value and show results, continue to leverage the investments you’ve made in virtualizing your users, services, and networks. As you expand into other business units, you’re leveraging the knowledge and experience you’ve already built, and you can add data virtualization to let you scale and refresh these environments quickly.

There’s a lot of value down the virtualization path, from seizing new opportunities to maximizing ROI on investments you’ve already made. If you do nothing, the challenges do not go away, but the opportunity to deliver higher quality—faster, with the functionality your end customers require—may.

IT leader assessment

This tool evaluates the correlation between IT attributes and business success and, based on how your answers compare with average scores, will advise you where to invest in IT.

It is based on data HP collected from 650 global companies about a range of IT characteristics (server capacities, approach to information management, security, BYOD, etc.) and how they correlate to revenue gain. This assessment will compare your answers to the average scores in that study.

There are 12 questions that will require an estimated 10 minutes of your time. You'll receive a summary of your rating upon completion.
