Automation boosts telecom’s productivity 50%

Qatar Telecom automates management of business services, cuts costs, speeds bill processing and minimizes risk.

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) is the leading telecommunications service provider for the state of Qatar, also operating in 16 other countries, with 57.5 million consolidated subscribers. Qtel delivers landline, mobile, cable television, Internet and data services to homes, businesses and governments across the Middle East, North Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

Speed and efficiency are keys to operating such a diverse business that so many far-flung customers rely on. As part of its ongoing HP IT Performance Suite strategy, the telecom provider ran a proof-of-concept exercise to automate the management of end-to-end business services to reduce costs, lower bill-processing times and minimize risk.

The Business Service Automation pilot, designed and deployed by HP Software Professional Services, incorporated Server Automation, Network Automation, Storage Essentials and Operations Orchestration. IT leaders at Qtel declared it a complete success.

“Following a proof of concept for HP Operations Orchestration, we wanted everything that Business Service Automation could offer,” said Adel Boday, Qtel’s manager of IT infrastructure and operations.

The new reality

Qtel’s new integrated suite automates the management of end-to-end business services. The server, network and storage components automate within their individual areas while HP Operations Orchestration integrates and coordinates all processes to gain maximum value. Server deployment, for example, now takes four hours instead of two weeks.

Automation has also given Qtel greater control and visibility of its network infrastructure. It provides a central point to standardize configuration changes, reducing the possibility of human error and noncompliance.

After experiencing the power of HP’s IT Performance Suite tool, Qtel decided to automate some additional critical tasks including its corporate online bill imaging solution and the operational weekly test-billing process.

HP Operations Orchestration creates folders, eliminates duplicate reports, produces logs and checks the status of emails. “BillXpress now generates static reports automatically for all subscribed customers as soon as billing is complete. Staff no longer have to monitor the process and can spend their time on other important projects such as cloud computing, which supports our HP IT Performance Suite strategy,” says Shaikh Abdul Gafoor, senior IT system analyst at Qtel.

After automating data center operations and numerous day-to-day business processes, Qtel has experienced:

  • A 50 percent increase in productivity thanks to fully integrated management of a number of key end-to-end business processes.
  • A 50 percent reduction in time that staff spends monitoring billing processes.
  • Faster implementation of new projects.
