'Trained intuition’: HP’s approach to security analyst training

It’s about a lot more than tools.

In this 2 ½-minute clip, Chris Calvert, director of solutions innovation for HP Enterprise Security Products, describes the HP approach to security analyst training. It’s less about watching your data assets and more about understanding how and why your adversaries attack.

"Our approach is to focus on analytical thinking, not just operations," Calvert says. "If you only rely on your tools and escalation procedures, then you’ll miss the largest chunk of attacks—the dangerous ones."

HP’s program prepares analysts to deal with advanced attackers. Calvert notes that the analysts study criminal psychology and intelligence analysis as much as tools and tech.  The result is an analyst who can spot trouble early, with "trained intuition," which Calvert describes as "a form of mental pattern matching taught by analyzing large numbers of modern attacks."
