Want people to start reading your blog?

January 2014

Organizations of all kinds are using their blog to better engage with their audience. It provides the perfect forum for a casual but informative conversation to promote your mission. But writing a compelling blog is only half the battle. Many well-written and thought-provoking posts go unnoticed because the administrator doesn’t go the extra mile to make sure their work reaches the largest audience possible.

There are a number of things you should consider when trying to expand your traffic. Many of these are easy steps that can be incorporated into your posting routine.

1. Utilize keywords and phrases
Before you post your latest entry, use Google Adwords to make sure you are using standard phrases. A common phrase will ensure potential readers find your work when searching about a specific topic. These readers are already interested in the topic, so reaching them should be a top priority. Also, simply adding the key phrase to the title, header and call to action will positively impact your search ranking and may even get your blog on that illusive first search page.

2. Link past posts
Adding a link to posts will quickly take your reader to a previous piece and engage with them on a broader level. This also provides an opportunity to share popular posts that have proven success. Those posts resonated with readers, so you know they are interesting and engaging. Another option is to write a roundup of your top posts. This can be done on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis.

3. Share on social media
Post your articles on Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and Facebook to keep casual readers up to date on your latest work. This should be a no-brainer, but many blog writers forget this essential step. When linking your article, be sure to include a teaser to start the conversation and capture readers. Also, use the phrase “ICYMI” (in case you missed it) to repost anything that readers might have missed. This will help you reach audiences who are active only during certain hours.

You can also take advantage of Facebook Ads to share your blog with potential readers. It will take into account the preferences of an individual user so you’re reaching the right audience.

4. Optimize each post
When you’re putting together a post, make sure it has the potential to captivate the audience. Something as simple as adding a picture will grab the reader’s eye. Once you have their attention, you should consider including compelling evidence and a call to action to drive your point home. Also, edit and format your post so it is aesthetically pleasing and easy to read. This will ensure your blog is understood by your audience, which will deliver better results.

5. Follow and comment on other blogs
Reading and commenting on similar blogs can be useful on a number of levels. The comment section is a great opportunity to learn more about your audience and provide a link to your blog. Also, you can develop relationships with other writers to build a stronger network.

These simple steps can help you increase the traffic to your blog. Most are just quick tasks that can be added to your routine to maximize the effectiveness of each post, and help you engage and expand your audience. Going the extra mile will help your blog—and your business—reach its full potential.
