Aurasma Takes Star Trek Fans “Where No Man Has Gone Before”

Lauren Offers is Global Head of Aurasma Marketing.

HP’s augmented reality platform Aurasma is just one example of our ongoing innovation. Aurasma uses HP Autonomy’s advanced image recognition to bring real world images and objects to digital life on mobile devices.

How does it work? Aurasma allows people to use rich images in search instead of text or QR codes. This turns searching into a visual, action-oriented and interactive experience.

Aurasma’s visual search now has more than 16,000 customers spanning multiple industries, including advertising, automotive, education, fashion, music, publishing and sport. Watch the video below to get a better feel for how customers are using Aurasma.

One customer in particular, Realise Digital, leveraged Aurasma to build the “Beam Me Up” app to engage Star Trek fans at a three-day long Destination Star Trek convention in October 2012. More than 6,000 fans participated in the augmented reality experience, using the app to beam themselves off a Star Trek transporter by pointing the app at a specially constructed stage. The app was downloaded more than 4,000 times in three short days and has since been nominated for a prestigious Webby Award.

We’re excited about the future of Aurasma and the potential of augmented reality. Aurasma’s power scales with mobile device processing power, so expect to see even more realistic and immersive experiences from Aurasma in the future.  As the Trekkies say, “Resistance is futile.”
