HP Announces Environmental Milestones for Reduced Waste, Materials Reuse and Easier Recycling
PALO ALTO, Calif. --HPtoday announced several milestones in the company’s push todeliverenergy savings, decrease carbon footprint and offer productsandsolutions that enable customers to reduce theirenvironmentalimpact.
As part of these efforts,HPis:
- Working to reduce waste in its manufacturing, distributionandproduct development, enabling responsible purchase, useandrecycling of products by customers.
- Offering ways to help customers reduce waste in theirprintinguses.
- Introducing ways to reduce waste through productpackaging.
- Achieving industry-leading milestones in recycling and theuseof recycled plastic.

Enabling reduction ofwasteand energy, reusing reclaimed materials and designing for easeinrecyclability are among the key principles of HP’senvironmentalcommitment.
To date, HP hasproducedmore than 1 billion ink cartridges manufactured withrecycledplastic.(1) Through this and other efforts, HPhaspledged to use a total of 100 million pounds of recycled plasticinprinting products by 2011 (cumulatively, since 2007).
HP hasdevelopedmanufacturing processes that use recycled plastics,including HPink cartridges and plastic water bottles, in OriginalHP inkcartridges to deliver an estimated 22 percent reduction incarbonfootprint and a 69 percent reduction in total water usewhencompared with using virgin plastics in the manufacture of 1billionOriginal HP ink cartridges.(2) Recycling effortsbycustomers and HP have kept approximately 1.3 billionplasticbottles and 160 million HP ink cartridges out oflandfills.
HP is improvingtheefficiency of its recycling processes. The recycled plastic usedinHP ink cartridges produced in 2010 and beyond is estimatedtoreduce total water used in plastics production by up to 89percent.And, it has up to an estimated 33 percent smaller carbonfootprintthan virgin plastic in Original HP ink cartridges – evenwhenaccounting for the impact associated with collecting,transportingand processing used cartridges andplasticbottles.(2)
HP’s dedicationtomanufacturing products with responsible materials has led tothedevelopment of: the planet’s first PVC-freeprinter,(3)the HP ENVY 100 e-All-in-One; products made with up to35percent recycled plastic, like the HP Deskjet 3050 All-in-One; and the ability torecycleadditional types of cartridges made with various plasticpolymersthrough HP’s industry-leading “closed loop” cartridgerecyclingprocess.
HP offers ENERGYSTAR®qualified devices in every aspect of its product portfolio,withproducts that reduce energy use, resulting in cost savings.Many ofHP’s ENERGY STAR qualified products also offer automatedtwo-sidedprinting, enabling customers to significantly reduce wastewhileprinting.
For enterprise customers,HPoffers Managed Print Services (MPS). HP helped UnitedStationers, aleading North American wholesale distributor ofbusiness products,reduce its fleet of printers and copiers from160 different makesand models to just a few HP models for reducedenergy and suppliescosts.
Saving money with HP MPSwaspart of a corporate-wide initiative that United Stationerscalls its“war on waste,” through which it has achieved 30 percentcostreductions. The company expects to create an additional 20 to25percent in savings through planned rollouts of further HPsolutions.United Stationers spent 16 weeks evaluating vendors toimplement amanaged print approach and chose HP as the bestcollaborator fordelivering savings.
HP also isenablingcustomers who use retail photo solutions to benefit fromwastereduction. A 2010 life cycle assessment revealed that thecarbonfootprint of HP Minilab printers was up to 30 percent smallerthanthat of silver-halide systems.(4) In one year,thisenables a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by anamountcomparable to up to 386 gallons of gasoline consumptionorapproximately 38,000 hours of LCD TV viewing.(5)
If everysilver-halideprinter system worldwide were replaced with an HPMinilab, theresult would be the equivalent of saving the carbonemissions of upto 65,000 cars per year.(6)
HP is enabling smallandmedium business customers to conserve resources with productssuchas the HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One, which delivers 50percentlower energy use and cost per page than competitive laserprintersand yields an 80 percent reduction in packaging andsupplies wasteover the life of the printer.(7)
Media designedwiththe environment in mind
Recycled plain paperswithColorLok® Technology yield excellent print quality, equal tomanynon-recycled papers. Customers can count on bright, vividcolors,dark black text and crisp graphics when using recycled plainpaperswith ColorLok Technology. Because recycled papers withColorLokTechnology perform as well as many papers without recycledcontent,customers can reduce environmental impact withoutsacrificing printquality.(8)
HP graphic artscustomersbenefit from the company’s HPmediatake-back program(9) and deinking work. Fordigitalproduction printing, HP is working to improve the useofhigh-impact inks and the removal of these inks from mediaforresponsible disposal of both ink and media.
As a leader in thedigitalproduction printing space, HP is partnering with Stora Ensotoconduct research on HP processes and materials. HP’sdeinkingresearch is part of ongoing collaborative efforts betweenHP and HPLabs, the company’s central research arm, along withleading papersuppliers, digital press manufacturers andresearchorganizations.
HP is now collaboratingwithUPM to investigate and implement best practices in coatedsheet useand disposal. This is part of a large digital printdeinkingcollaboration designed to provide digital media customersmorerobust solutions with reduced environmental impact.
Several of HP’sconsumerproducts are wrapped in reusable totes, offering packagingthat is99 percent reusable or recyclable(10) andallowingcustomers to reduce their use of plastic shopping bags inthefuture.
In packaging itsconsumerprinters, HP has replaced foam cushioning with recyclablepulpcushioning (where possible) and replaced plastic bags withreusablebags. In 2010, HP has seen significant reductions inpackagingwaste, avoiding the use of materials equivalent to morethan 300million 6-ounce Styrofoam™ cups(11) and enoughplasticto cover 1,400 NFL football fields.
In 2010, HP estimatesthatit used approximately 10.5 million pounds of recycled plasticinits consumer printers, which is equal to the weight of1,060African elephants.(12) Using recycled plasticenablesenergy and fossil fuel savings in comparison tomanufacturing withvirgin plastic material.
Additionally, manylargeenterprise printing products now ship in ClearView packaging,whichsaves up to 147 tons of corrugated fiberboard per year. Inplace ofa corrugated cardboard box and foam packaging, HP usesminimal foamsupports and wraps the product in widely recyclablefilm, reducingthe volume and weight of packaging by 70 percent.
Thanks tocustomerinvolvement, HP has achieved significant progress in itsrecyclingprograms and now offers HP Planet Partners return and recycling programs in more than50countries and territories around the world.
In 2008, HP announcedtheindustry’s first and only “closed loop” ink cartridgerecyclingprocess – an engineering breakthrough that enables the useof usedOriginal HP ink cartridges returned through the PlanetPartnersprogram and other sources, such as recycled water bottles,in theproduction of new Original HP ink cartridges. In 2010,usingrecycled plastic instead of new plastic in Original HPcartridgesis reducing fossil fuel use associated with HPcartridgemanufacture, transport and recycling by up to62percent.(2)
Additionally, HPhasexpanded the number of papers it offers that containcertifiedfibers that meet a set of requirements for responsibleorsustainable harvesting. Following last year’s introduction of Forest Stewardship Council(FSC)-certifiedEveryday Photo Paper, HP is expanding certificationto itsspecialty paper portfolio, offering Programme for theEndorsementof Forest Certification (PEFC)- and FSC-certifiedbrochure andflyer papers as well as presentation papers for usewith HPLaserJet or inkjet printers in North America.
