Understanding Mobile Printing

HP's mobile printing solutions let you print wirelessly from any mobile device, such as a smartphone, tablet or a laptop, to an HP ePrint-enabled or wireless printer.

Depending on the mobile printing solution you choose, you can send print jobs from your email account, or you can print directly to a supported HP printer that is connected to the same wireless network as your mobile device.

Many HP printers are now 'ePrint-enabled'. Like smartphones and tablets, you can quickly and easily connect these printers to the Internet by joining your local wireless network.

You might be wondering "Why does my printer need to connect to the web? I just need to connect it to my computer or local network to print, right?" This is true if you do all of your printing from your PC or Mac, but what if you want to print something from your mobile device?

HP's ePrint-enabled printers use the Internet connection to receive and manage print jobs sent from your mobile device.

Most HP printers released in 2010 and later feature ePrint and support mobile printing. To see if your printer is ePrint-enabled, go to Supported Printers for Cloud Services.

HP has a range of options to choose from when you want to print from your mobile device:

	HP ePrint mobile app for Android and Apple devices: This free app lets you print from your Android mobile device or from your Apple iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch via email to any HP ePrint-enabled printer anywhere, or to a supported wireless printer that is connected to the same local Wi-Fi network as your mobile device.
	HP Home & Biz app for Symbian devices: This free app lets you print from your Symbian (Nokia) mobile device to any HP ePrint-enabled printer anywhere, or to a supported wireless printer that is connected to the same local Wi-Fi network as your mobile device.
	Apple AirPrint: Print wirelessly from AirPrint-enabled apps on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch (running iOS 4.2 or higher) to any ePrint-enabled HP printer that is connected to the same local Wi-Fi network as your mobile device.

HP recommends that you follow the setup instructions that came with your ePrint-enabled printer to start using ePrint. Additionally, some printers might require a printer firmware update.

To print with ePrint, the printer must be connected to your network and you need to enable Web Services. When you enable Web Services on the printer, an information sheet prints with your ePrint registration code.

You will use this printer registration code when you create an ePrint account and obtain your printer's email address at ePrintCenter. 

NOTE: For specific steps on enabling Web Services or printing your ePrint registration code for your printer, go to HP Customer Care, type your printer name in the window, and then search for 'Getting Started with ePrint'.

How to enable Web Services on your printer

If you have not already enabled Web Services, or if you need to re-enable them, follow the steps below based on your printer model:

Photosmarts and Deskjets: Depending on your model, use the Enable Web Services option available under the Setup>Wireless>Web Services or under the Setup>Web menu on the printer, or via the ePrint icon () on the printer control panel home screen.

Officejets: Select the Setup>Web Services Setup option to enable Web Services. Make sure that both ePrint and Apps are turned 'ON' during the setup.

LaserJets: Print a configuration page from your printer to locate the IP address. Open a web browser on your computer, and then type the printer's IP address into the address line. The HP EWSEmbedded software that allows product configuration via any Web browser. Embedded Web Server (EWS) opens. Click the HP Web Services tab, and then select the option to enable Web Services. 

How to reprint your ePrint registration code

If you already enabled Web Services, and you need to reprint the Web Services information sheet to get your ePrint registration code, follow the steps below based on your printer model:

Photosmarts and Deskjets: Depending on your model, select Print Report in the Setup>Wireless>Web Services>Settings menu, or via the ePrint icon () on the printer control panel home screen.

Officejets: Depending on the printer model, select Print in the Setup>Web Services Setup>Printer Email Address menu, or via the ePrint icon () on the printer front panel display.

LaserJets: Print a configuration page from your printer to locate the IP address. Open a web browser on your computer, and then type the printer's IP address into the address line. The HP Embedded Web Server opens. Click the HP Web Services tab, and then click the Print Information Sheet button.

AirPrint: Apple's mobile printing solution that lets you print from any AirPrint-enabled app on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch (running iOS 4.2 or higher) to any ePrint-enabled HP printer that is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the mobile device

Android: The Google mobile operating system software that runs on a range of mobile devices

Cloud printing: Printing with the 'The Cloud' means that a print job is securely managed and routed over the Internet by remote servers, letting you send print jobs to any cloud-connected printer that you have access to; ePrint jobs sent via email are an example of HP's cloud printing solutions

ePrint: HP's mobile printing solution that lets you send print jobs from any mobile device via email to any HP ePrint-enabled printer that you have access to

ePrint-enabled printer: An HP printer that connects to the Internet via a wireless network, enabling mobile printing as well as the delivery of pre-formatted content from ePrintCenter print apps

ePrintCenter: HP's web-based site for ePrint users to get their printer's email address, check printer status, add and remove Print Apps, and manage print settings and job history

ePrint mobile app (Android): A free HP app for Android mobile devices that lets you print either from your email-enabled mobile device to an HP ePrint-enabled printer, or to a wireless printer that is connected to the same local Wi-Fi network as your mobile device

HP ePrint mobile app (Apple): Free HP app for Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch users lets you print either from an email-enabled mobile device to an HP ePrint-enabled printer, or to a wireless printer that is connected to the same local Wi-Fi network as your mobile device

ePrint Home & Biz app (Symbian): A free HP app for Symbian (Nokia) mobile devices that lets you print either from your email-enabled mobile device to an HP ePrint-enabled printer, or to a wireless printer that is connected to the same local Wi-Fi network as your mobile device

ePrint registration code: The claim code generated when you enable Web Services on your ePrint-enabled printer; use this code to register your printer at ePrintCenter and to get your ePrint email address

iOS: The mobile operating system software that runs on the Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch

Mobile device: An electronic device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer that lets you access and send information from any location within range of a network connection

Non ePrint-enabled printer: An HP printer that does not connect to the Internet, yet supports wireless mobile printing via the HP ePrint mobile app, or Google Cloud Print

Print Apps: Print pre-formatted content from HP and other leading companies with print apps available at HP ePrintCenter

Symbian: The mobile operating system software that runs many mobile devices such as Nokia smartphones

Web Services: A feature on ePrint-enabled HP printers that you enable in order to register for and use ePrint

Windows Phone: Formerly Windows Mobile, Microsoft's mobile operating system that runs on a range of mobile device brands, including Nokia, HTC, and Samsung

Wireless printing: Technology that lets you print from a mobile device to a supported printer via a wireless network connection
