February 2013: IDC released a quarterly update to their Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, citing market share figures for the 4th calendar quarter of 2012 (4Q12) and the year (CY2012).

Consider these telling facts:

Fact 1: For more than 10 consecutive years, 43 straight quarters, HP is the #1 vendor in worldwide server shipments with a 32.7% total unit shipment share in 2012.

HP shipped more than 2.6 million servers in 2012 which was 546,000 more servers than Dell, 2.5 times as many as IBM, 8.6 times as many as Fujitsu, 12.7 times as many as Cisco and 29.6 times as many as Oracle.

HP shipped a server every 11.8 seconds in 2012 (24x7) and 1 out of 3 servers shipped worldwide.

 

Fact 2: HP has a commanding lead in the total blade server market, with a 47.2% revenue share for 2012. HP has led the blade server market for 25 consecutive quarters, more than 6 years.

In 2012, HP shipped more blades servers than IBM, Dell, Cisco, Fujitsu and Oracle combined.

HP shipped 2.4 times as many blades as IBM, 3.5 times as many as Cisco and 4.6 times as many as Dell.

 

Fact 3: For close to 17 consecutive years, 67 quarters, HP ProLiant is the x86 server market share leader in both factory revenue and units1.

Sequentially in 4Q12, HP gained more market share (both units and revenue) of any major server vendor.

 

Fact 4: HP is #1 in Windows® revenue and units worldwide.

HP has a commanding 36.8% revenue share of the Windows market in 2012 and leading the nearest competitor, Dell, by 12.0 percentage points.

 

Fact 5: For 2012 HP is #1 in Linux® revenue, 27.0%, and units, 28.6%

For 2012 HP leads its nearest competitor IBM by 8.2 percentage points and Dell by 8.9 points of revenue share.

 

Fact 6: For the 3 major operating environments UNIX, Windows and Linux combined (representing 99.9% of all servers shipped worldwide in 2012), HP is number one worldwide in server unit shipments and revenue.

For 2012 HP holds a 32.7% unit market share worldwide, which is 6.7 percentage points higher than #2 Dell.
