August 2012: IDC released a quarterly update to their Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, citing market share figures for the second calendar quarter of 2012 (2Q12).

Consider these telling facts:

Fact 1: For 10+ consecutive years, 41 straight quarters, HP is the #1 vendor in worldwide server shipments with a 33.7% total unit shipment share.

HP shipped more than 678,000 servers in 2Q12 which was 137,000 more servers than Dell, 2.9 times as many servers as IBM, 8.9 times as Fujitsu, 13.9 times as many as Cisco and 23.9 times as many as Oracle.

HP shipped a server every 12 seconds and shipped more than 1 in every 3 servers customers purchased worldwide.

 

Fact 2: HP is the #1 vendor in worldwide server revenue (tied) with a 29.6% total revenue share.

In terms of total revenue share, HP is 13.5 percentage points ahead of #3, Dell.

 

Fact 3: HP has a commanding lead in the total blade server market, with a 51.5% revenue share. HP has led the blade server market for 23 consecutive quarters, 5 ¾ years.

HP gained 5.4 blade revenue percentage points and 6.2 blade unit percentage points sequentially.

HP shipped 3.1 times as many blades as IBM, 4.2 times as many as Cisco and 5.2 times as many as Dell. HP grew total blade units, year over year, at a rate that was more than twice that of the overall blade market.

 

Fact 4: For16+ consecutive years, 65 quarters, HP ProLiant is the x86 server market share leader in both factory revenue and units 1.

HP’s x86 revenue share, 36.4%, was 13.3 percentage points higher than its nearest competitor Dell, 22.2 percentage points higher than IBM and 32.1 percentage points higher than Cisco.

 

Fact 5: HP is the number one supplier of Itanium (EPIC) based systems based on worldwide unit volume and worldwide factory revenue.

HP Integrity blades maintained the #1 position in revenue for the RISC+EPIC blade segment with 65.2% worldwide share, gaining 6.1 percentage points sequentially.

 

Fact 6: HP is #1 in Windows® revenue and units worldwide.

HP has a commanding 39.7% revenue share of the Windows market and leads over the nearest competitor, Dell, by 15.5 percentage points.

 

Fact 7: HP is #1 in Linux® revenue, 27.6%, and units, 28.9%.

In terms of Linux revenue share HP leads its nearest competitor Dell by 7.6 percentage points and IBM by 11.5 points.

 

Fact 8: For the three major operating environments UNIX, Windows and Linux combined (representing 99.9% of all servers shipped worldwide), HP is number one worldwide in both server unit shipments and revenue.

HP holds a 33.7% unit market share worldwide, which is 6.8 percentage points higher than #2 Dell. HP has 32.6% worldwide revenue share, leading by 9.5 percentage points over #2 in revenue IBM.
