Receiving a fax on your HP Fax device
Your HP All-in-One printer or HP Fax device can be configured to receive faxes automatically or manually.
Automatic mode implies that the HP fax device will activate to answer any incoming calls whereas Manual mode will require you manually activate the HP fax to answer an incoming call.
This article can help you decide what is the answer mode that better fits your needs and configure your HP fax to receive a fax automatically or manually.

A correct configuration of the HP fax answer mode will depend on the use you intend to make of your HP fax device. See below a description of the different options available so you can decide which of them to use:
If you set your fax HP device to answer calls automatically, it will answer all incoming calls and will not be able to distinguish between fax and voice calls; if you suspect the call is a voice call, you will need to answer it before the device answers the call.
This is the most appropriate answer mode when there is dedicated fax line for the printer.
If you set up your HP device to answer faxes manually, you must be available to respond in person to incoming fax calls; otherwise your HP device will not receive faxes.
Some HP fax models incorporate more specific Answer Mode options, namely:
Fax: The HP fax device will automatically answer all incoming calls according to the Rings to Answer setting.
FaxTel (only for models that incorporate a phone handset): The HP fax device will automatically answer all incoming calls according to the Rings to Answer setting.
If the call is a fax call, the HP fax device will take it.
If the call is a voice call, the HP fax device will create a special ring to indicate that it is a voice call.
NOTE: Voice calls need to be answered using the attached handset.
Tel: The HP fax device will not automatically take calls. Faxes need to be received manually.
AnswerMachine (TAM): The HP fax device will monitor the line when an incoming call is answered by a person or by the answering machine. If the HP fax device detects fax tones on the line, it will activate to receive the fax.

To receive faxes automatically, set the Auto Answer option to On (the default setting). The printer will automatically answer all incoming calls and receive faxes after the number of rings specified by the Rings to Answer setting. (Rings to Answer is set to five rings by default).
- Auto Answer: Depending on the HP All-in-One or Fax model, Auto Answer can be enabled either from a button on the control panel or by setting the “Answer mode” to “Automatic” from the Setup menu.
- Rings to answer: Select the number of rings before the fax activates to receive an incoming fax by selecting the appropriate value from the Basic Fax Configuration menu (accessible from the Setup menu).
NOTE: Check the documentation and manuals that came with your HP All-in-One or Fax device to learn how to configure Auto Answer and Rings to Answer.

Most telephone service providers offer a Distinctive Ring service that allows several phone numbers on a single phone line. Each number has a different ring pattern.
The HP device can be set to answer only incoming calls that have a specific ring pattern. Have your telephone service provider assign one ring pattern to voice calls and another ring pattern to fax calls.
NOTE: Check with your local phone service provider to determine the availability of this service. If the Distinctive Ring service is not available or you do not want to enable it, set the HP fax ring pattern to All Rings.
When the phone rings with the ring pattern assigned to your fax line, the HP fax device will activate to answer the call and receive the fax.

When the HP fax and the telephone share the same phone line, you can take a call, decide whether it is a voice or fax call and, if the latter, prompt the HP All-in-One or Fax to receive the fax.
In order to configure the HP fax this way, it is enough to set Auto Answer to Off or (depending on the HP fax model) Answer Mode to Manual or Tel.
To receive a fax manually, press the Start Fax button or select the Fax mode and press the Start button.
NOTE: If the phone you are using is on the same phone line as the HP fax device but is not plugged into the 2-EXT port on the back of the HP device, you might not be close enough to the HP fax to reach the control panel.
If you cannot reach the control panel, wait several seconds and press 1 2 3 on the phone. If the HP fax device does not start receiving the fax, wait several more seconds and press 1 2 3 again. After the HP All-in-One starts receiving the fax, you can hang up the phone.
