HP ProLiant Servers Deliver Extreme Compute Performance
SALT LAKE CITY -- HP today extended its HP ProLiant Generation 8 (Gen8) portfolio with new servers that deliver unprecedented processor power for extreme compute performance needed to accelerate research for leading government, academic and industrial institutions.
HP also announced that HP ProLiant Gen8 servers have helped leading research institutions speed scientific achievements and advance to top spots on the TOP500 list of the world’s highest performing supercomputers.
Scientific researchers performing calculative-intensive tasks such as modeling, weather forecasting, oil exploration or genetic research, consume massive amounts of data that require massive amounts of computational power and energy resources. They need systems that provide a higher level of performance while consuming less power and occupying a small footprint.
The new HP ProLiant SL270s Gen 8 server delivers processor density, compute power and intelligent management features with the HP ProActive Insight Architecture to automate, accelerate and optimize a server environment to reach higher performance levels than ever before.
Intelligent management and enhanced processor density accelerate performance
Leveraging built-in HP 3-D Sea of Sensors technology, HP ProLiant SL270s Gen 8 servers enable clients to identify overutilized servers based on location, power, workload and temperature data, to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs. Additionally, HP Active Health System automates troubleshooting across the system, eliminating tedious administrative tasks and speeding problem analysis and resolution.
To address high performance computing (HPC) demands, the HP ProLiant SL270s Gen8 offers maximized processor density, with the ability to support up to eight Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessors or eight NVIDIA® Kepler™ graphic processing units (GPUs) per server.
The HP ProLiant SL270s and SL250s Gen8 will support the latest NVIDIA Kepler GPUs and newly announced Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors, enabling clients to select the best accelerator or coprocessor for their specific workloads.
HP ProLiant servers advance clients to TOP500
“As the most powerful GPU supercomputer available through the National Science Foundation’s Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) program, Keeneland provides our scientists tremendous compute resources to support their advanced research applications,” said Dr. Jeffrey Vetter, project director, Keeneland, Georgia Tech and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. “The capabilities of HP ProLiant SL250s Gen8 servers coupled with the NVIDIA GPUs provide the extreme computational performance necessary for our researchers to create breakthroughs in many fields of science.”
This year’s TOP500 list included 149 HP ProLiant server deployments, including:
- Georgia Tech/Oak Ridge National Labs Keeneland System ranked No. 74 on this year’s TOP500 list. The company deployed 264 HP ProLiant SL250s Gen8 servers to enhance research across a broad range of scientific fields. The system is capable of analyzing 615 Teraflops of data per second at peak performance.
- The National Supercomputer Center in Sweden ranked No. 82 on the TOP500 list for the Triolith computing cluster. The system is funded by the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) to provide Swedish researchers with dedicated HPC resources. Having deployed 1,200 HP ProLiant SL230s Gen8 servers, the system has a theoretical peak performance of 338 Teraflops per second.
- CSC, the IT Center for Science Ltd., in Finland, selected HP ProLiant SL230 Gen8 servers—ranking No. 167 on this year’s TOP500 list—to provide cost-effective supercomputing capacity for research across Finland and the rest of Europe. The new Kajaani Data Center is one of the most eco-efficient in the world, with a Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) design target value of 1.15.
Pricing and availability
The HP ProLiant SL250s Gen8 servers, starting at $5,659, and the new HP ProLiant SL270s Gen8 servers, starting at $6,166, will be available in December with the NVIDIA Kepler GPUs and early next year with the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors.
HP’s premier Europe, Middle East and Africa client event, HP Discover, takes place Dec. 4-6 in Frankfurt, Germany.
