February 2014: IDC released a quarterly update to their Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, citing market share figures for the 4th calendar quarter of 2013 (4Q13) and the full calendar year 2013.

Consider these telling facts:

Fact 1: For the full calendar year 2013, HP is the number 1 vendor in terms of both worldwide server shipment and revenue.

In 2013 HP overtook IBM for the #1 total server revenue position based on a full calendar year.

For 4Q13, HP grew worldwide server revenue at a rate of 5.7% year over year, while IBM declined -28.5%, Fujitsu declined -9.9%, Dell declined-2.4% and Oracle declined -2.2% during the same period.

 

Fact 2: For close to 12 consecutive years, 47 straight quarters, HP is the #1 vendor in worldwide server shipments.

For 4Q13, HP grew server units at a rate of 8.8% year over year, while IBM decreased -20.8% and Dell decreased -5.4% during the same period.

 

Fact 3: HP leads the total blade server market, with a 43.8% revenue share. HP has led the blade server market for 29 consecutive quarters, more than 7 years.

HP shipped 2.7 times as many blades as IBM, 2.8 times as many as Cisco and 4.1 times as many as Dell.

For 4Q13, HP gained blade unit market share sequentially, quarter over quarter, while IBM, Cisco and Dell all lost share during the same period.

 

Fact 4: HP is number 1 in the density optimized server market, leading in both revenue and units.

For 4Q13, HP gained 26.5 points of density optimized server revenue share, year over year, while Dell lost -29.9 points and IBM lost -8.7 points of revenue share for the same period.

 

Fact 5: HP leads in combined density optimized and blade servers with 26.9 more points of revenue market share than the closest competitor, IBM, in 4Q13.

HP leads with 41.0% revenue market share in this segment, identified by IDC as a significant and growing market, driven by demand in public cloud hyperscale environments, as well as private cloud and integrated systems. 2

 

Fact 6: HP ProLiant is the x86 server market share leader in both factory revenue and units.

HP’s is number one in x86 server revenue and units for nearly 18 consecutive years, 71 quarters. 1

 

Fact 7: HP leads in EPIC+RISC blade server revenue.

HP Integrity blades maintained the number one position in revenue for the RISC+EPIC blade segment with 61.1% worldwide share.

 

Fact 8: HP is #1 in Windows® revenue and units worldwide.

HP has a 37.6% revenue share of the Windows market and leads over the nearest competitor, Dell, by 13.8 percentage points.

 

Fact 9: HP is #1 in Linux® revenue and units worldwide.

In terms of Linux revenue share HP leads IBM by 11.0 points and Dell by 11.7 points.

 

Fact 10: For the 3 major operating environments UNIX, Windows and Linux combined (representing 99.9% of all servers shipped worldwide), HP is number 1 worldwide in server revenue and unit shipments.
