HP Improves Communications For Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) is an acute teaching hospital working across two sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. With 7,500 staff, the BSUH treats over three quarters of a million patients annually.
“To improve services to our desktop PC users, we needed to move from our existing shared service model to a stable, standardised IT infrastructure,” says Ian Arbuthnot, IT Director, BSUH. “The flexibility of HP Converged Cloud coupled with Microsoft Hyper-V has enabled us to develop a true private cloud solution based on HP CloudSystem. The HP CloudSystem platform is completely integrated, reliable and simple to manage. Later, we hope to use some of its design tools to help more advanced users such as renal researchers.”
BSUH’s new infrastructure supports the Trust’s new Electronic Patient Record system, and has enabled a shift towards more flexible working. HP CloudSystem, a core element of the HP Converged Cloud portfolio, has enabled BSUH to rollout Microsoft Lync to all PCs and tablets, delivering a reliable messaging capability for increased collaboration and productivity. As well as increasing IT agility and improving access to information, the end-to-end HP private cloud solution running Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft System Center has lowered BSUH’s costs.
HP Gold Partner and HP Converged Infrastructure Partner of the Year OCSL recommended and implemented an HP CloudSystem based on two space-saving HP ProLiant BladeSystem c7000 enclosures with 16 HP ProLiant BL460 G7 server blades, and six HP ProLiant DL380c/DL360 rack-mounted servers, all integrated with HP Matrix Operating Environment, for infrastructure provisioning in minutes.
HP Converged Infrastructure safeguards the Trust’s mission-critical data. HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 10Gb Ethernet Modules simplify the connection of the server blades to a storage area network (SAN) comprising four HP StoreVirtual P4500 Storage Systems with automated failover to ensure business continuity and an HP StoreEver MSL4048 LTO-4 Ultrium Tape Library for secondary backup. Scalable capacity and performance enable the SAN to seamlessly grow with BSUH’s needs.
An HP Performance Optimized Datacenter (POD) in a strategically located truck provides additional disaster recovery capability,
“Successful organisations need to be able to select the right delivery model for their technology needs,” says David Chalmers, vice president CT, HP EMEA. “HP’s Converged Cloud approach provides enterprises like BSUH with a choice of delivery models and platforms coupled with a consistent architecture and experience.”
