KILKENNY, Ireland, April, 17, 2013 — HP announced today that Surfbox has transformed its business with HP ePrint by enabling smartphone users to print direct from their devices.
Surfbox provides internet access via a network of 800 self-service kiosks in hotels, ferryports, airports, public libraries and shopping malls across Ireland, the UK, France and Belgium. In the future, all Surfbox kiosks will also provide mobile print and payment services.
“To expand our traditional internet access business, we needed to develop new markets among mobile device users, a growing segment of the market,” says Thomas Marry, CEO, Surfbox. “HP has enabled us to change our business model rapidly by providing ePrint services for smartphone and tablet users. Print accounted for 15 percent of revenue in 2011, but in 2012 it was 25 percent, and it will grow over the next 12 months as we add new locations. 350 of our kiosks now offer public printing, and we have seen a 14 percent increase in printing at airports. There’s no reason you couldn’t eventually print off, say, a motor vehicle tax disc from a kiosk in a shopping mall or library.”
HP ePrint and HP Printer On applications provide Surfbox with a robust solution for mobile printing. Users simply open the app, find the nearest printer, send the document to print and go to a Surfbox kiosk to pay and collect the documents. For example, travellers can buy a ticket for the Heathrow Express from their departure gate at Dublin Airport and print the ticket from a Surfbox kiosk before boarding the plane.
As local and national governments push more services online, requiring citizens to print off official documents, ePrint kiosks in libraries or other civic offices will become more commonplace. Surfbox started a trial at five public libraries in Wexford in October 2012 and is predicting print volumes of 25,000 A4 pages per month.
“Surfbox needed to innovate to drive growth as their business transformed from a provider of internet access to a mobile ePrint provider,” says Gary Tierney, PPS Country Manager HP Ireland. “As well as providing new revenue streams, the reliable, robust HP solution has helped reduce maintenance costs and improve customer satisfaction. The ability to offer new , tangible and differentiated services based on real customer driven demand has always been at the core of the Surfbox business model.”
