Find Windows 7 Drivers for HP Printers

When Microsoft releases a new operating system, HP strives to provide driver options for all new and as many existing printers as possible.  The type of driver option available for your product depends on a number of factors, but generally HP printers more than seven years old are unlikely to be supported in Windows 7.

If you purchased your HP printer after the release of the Windows 7 operating system, it will be supported with a full-feature driver.  However, if your printer was sold before the release of Windows 7, it may or may not be supported, depending on how old it is.

Once you have determined if there is a Windows 7 printer driver available for your product, the following section explains the different types of printer drivers and the best way to obtain them.

Full Feature DriverFull Feature Driver

HP printers sold since the release of Windows 7 should come with a CD containing the necessary drivers and software for the product.  Simply insert the CD into your PC’s optical drive and follow the step-by-step installation instructions.

If a CD is not available, the driver can be downloaded from HP Customer Care.  Simply navigate to the site, type the model name or number of your HP printer into the search box, and select the Software & Driver Downloads support option.  Indicate which version of Windows 7 your PC is running (32-bit or 64-bit), click “Next”, then choose from the available driver options.

Or you may want to try HP’s Windows 7 Printer Install Wizard tool, which can automatically determine if a full solution driver is available for your printer, then download and install it on your PC.  The Wizard currently covers nearly 300 HP products.  And if a full solution driver is not available for your product, the Wizard directs you to a web page which provides alternative options.
Basic Feature DriverBasic Feature Driver

Many older HP printers are not supported with a full feature driver.  For these, HP offers a smaller driver that provides basic printing functions.  However, for multifunction printers, it typically does not provide the software needed to copy and fax from the computer, or to use all the scanning features of the product.

If a basic driver is available for the product, it can be downloaded from HP Customer Care. Simply navigate to the site, type the model name or number of your HP printer into the search box, and select the Software & Driver Downloads support option.  Indicate which version of Windows 7 your PC is running (32-bit or 64-bit), click “Next”, then choose from the available driver options.
In OS DriverIn OS Driver

For some printers, a driver solution is included in the Windows 7 operating system (“In OS”), installed on your computer.  When you plug your printer into your PC using a USB cable, the driver installation process starts automatically.  There is nothing else to download or install.

However, these “In OS” drivers typically lack some of the features and functionality that may have been available for your printer under earlier versions of Windows. With the “In OS” driver, some advanced product features are not available and some buttons on the product may not function.  However, you can print from a software program, like Microsoft Word, and import and view images on a memory card, if your product has a memory card slot.

Information on how to resolve issues with "In OS" drivers can be found in HP's How to Get Your Printer Working with Windows 7 document.

Windows Update DriverWindows Update Driver

In some cases, a printer driver can be obtained using the Windows Update function in the Windows 7 operating system, a tool Microsoft uses to deliver software and driver updates via the Internet.  Like “In OS” drivers, these have basic functionality.  Some buttons on the product might not function and some of the advanced product features are not available.  However, you can still print from a software program like Microsoft Word, and import and view images on a memory card, if your product has a memory card slot.

Information on how to resolve issues with Windows Update drivers can be found in HP's How to Get Your Printer Working with Windows 7 document.
