What I can do for you

I help customers understand what new innovations mean for their Data Center IT infrastructures – how they can take a pragmatic approach to incorporating new technologies into their existing IT infrastructures – understanding where they are now, where they want to go in the future and how to get there while minimizing costs and maximizing benefits to the business.

We live in a rapidly changing world where we are constantly faced with decisions on how to respond to new innovations – when we come to understand the reality of the situation it often turns out not so much to be a case of dealing with a “revolution in the what” but rather an "evolution of the how" – all enterprises are on a journey to improve the way they deliver IT to the business - understanding how innovation can assist you on that journey is what is important.

Who I am

I drive the strategy, vision and content of consulting services in the Data Centre IT Infrastructure services area at HP. My role involves understanding the future direction of the market and how we can shape our offerings to meet both current and future customer needs. As part of this, I meet with senior level customers to understand their challenges, conduct workshops to determine future vision and roadmaps as well as presenting at industry and analyst events. I think I relate well to customers because I am able to see the big picture and align IT with business needs. It’s not a case of focusing purely on the technology element but rather taking a holistic approach to understand the implications for the process and people elements also. I use a journey concept to show my customers where they are now, where they want to go and how to get there.

Professional Career

I was awarded an honors degree in Physics from Southampton University (UK) in 1978. Upon my graduation, I worked in the Aerospace Industry for 4 years as a space and military aircraft Systems Engineer for British Aerospace. In 1982, I joined Martin Marietta Corporation (US) to work on the Space Shuttle Program. In 1993, I joined Digital Equipment (now HP) as a Program Manager running large IT programs. I received my MBA with Distinction from the Warwick Business School (UK), and I have held country, region and worldwide positions in the consulting services business. These varied roles contributed to a broad base of experience in a variety of technologies that include application integration, ebusiness, Microsoft, mobility/wireless, security and data center/cloud.

What I have learned in my Career

My experience has been wide and varied. During this time I have learned the importance of understanding your audience and their perspective on particular situations.

To be successful we need to fully empathize with others - to get into their minds and really understand their issues, perspectives and needs. Then, one must communicate in a way that is meaningful. As technology becomes more complex and more integrated, it is critical to stand back and see the bigger picture and understand how the various parts fit together. As the saying goes "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts".

I have learned much about various technologies, methodologies and innovations over my career, however, the biggest learnings have been the non-technical ones - those related to common sense.
