Three core elements to transform applications - Assess, Modernize and Manage

Today's organizations struggle with too many applications, some of which are aging, inflexible and no longer support changing requirements. Mobility and cloud computing place new demands on legacy applications and their integration. That means applications must be transformed to new architectures and technologies that better meet the needs of today's enterprise.

So the question is no longer whether to transform aging applications and infrastructure, but how. We can help you gain control over legacy applications, inflexible processes and infrastructure that impede your responsiveness and innovation.

The transformation of your application portfolio in terms of size, functionality and cost is at the basis of the Instant-On enterprise.

Get started on your application transformation journey

Getting started requires a clear understanding of where you are now with regards to your application portfolio. Knowing this will determine the route forward that you need to take.

It begins with being able to answer 3 simple questions:

  • What should we keep?
  • What should we change?
  • What should we retire?

Assess

We analyze your application portfolio and map it to your tactical and strategic business goals. We can help determine the portfolio's size, composition and interdependencies. We will analyze its cost and performance to determine the most appropriate transformation approach.

Discover—Analyze—Decide

The first step is to understand where you're starting from. We analyze the application portfolio from multiple perspectives—cost, usage, risk and technology—to create a clear picture:

  • What applications are installed?
  • How well do they support your business goals?
  • Which ones offer the best payback from transformation?
  • Which ones should be delivered via the cloud ?

An Application Transformation Experience Workshop, where we jointly align future business requirements, enterprise architecture and technology trends, is a good place to start.

Through the Application Transformation Assessment, we:

  • Discover—the components of your portfolio using software tools including our patent-pending Visual Intelligence tools.
  • Analyze—to characterize each application's usage, cost, risks, security and technology.
  • Decide—which applications should be transformed, and we develop a transformation roadmap with associated actions, costs and benefits.

Modernize

Based on the outcome of the assessment –or your own assessment-we transform applications using a portfolio of proven techniques. This can involve re-hosting applications to more modern infrastructure or re-architecting monolithic applications.

Keep—Change—Retire

We transform applications that will generate a measurable and tangible benefit to your business. Benefits may include improved business processes, cost savings or the adoption of modern, flexible technologies like mobility or cloud computing.

Based on the assessment phase, applications fall into three broad categories:

  • Keep—There is no immediate need to modernize this application or little business value in doing so.
  • Change—The application requires modernization to address new business requirements and support innovation.
  • Retire—The application is no longer required to support a business process. You should plan to retire it.

Transformation programs usually span multiple budget cycles. But an effective transformation strategy will also identify short-term actions that serve new customer requirements or save cost. For example, transforming legacy COBOL applications on proprietary systems may provide payback in as little as six to nine months.

Manage

We plan for the "production state" of the application. This includes application security, reliability and performance to meet the demands of the business and business users.

Availability—Integrity—Continuity

Whether dealing with either traditional applications or those that have been transformed, application management keeps them doing what you need them to do—keeping the business running. Our broad range of application management tools:

  • Manage the entire applications lifecycle
  • Monitor the performance and availability delivered to users.
  • Handle problems and incidents.
  • Enable business continuity should problems arise.

New computing paradigms like cloud computing and mobility require heightened security. Our solutions proactively handle threats and integrate security procedures into each application’s operational processes. And that helps you manage risk.

The Instant-On enterprise provides for a hybrid delivery strategy. IT can deliver applications via a combination of on-premise, off-premise and cloud delivery. We combine our technology portfolio with our experience hosting, operating and maintaining applications in global data centers. That lets us provide a single management view of this diverse application environment.
