UPS® and HP: An IT collaboration

When UPS needed to modernize IT and stay one-step ahead of an ever-evolving business, long-time partner HP knew Converged Infrastructure was the answer. UPS didn't just slash IT maintenance needs and power usage. It also freed up their resources to make UPS even more responsive.

UPS progress towards an HP Converged Infrastructure started with upgrading their networking using HP 3500s. Next were HP ProLiant Gen8 DL380 servers. Finally, backup and recovery was improved with HP StoreOnce B6200s and Data Protector software. All this was done while limiting idle time for the system overall.

Results? Processing power more than doubled but now uses 40% less energy. Backup moved from tape to a centralized hub, for enhanced recovery and data security. All told, UPS will be saving over 3,000,000 kWh a year.

A partnership for continuous results

UPS needed to modernize IT operations in other ways too. Their HP Converged Infrastructure now helps them better meet tough corporate and industry sustainability benchmarks. These standards are part of UPS culture and they take them very seriously.

A partnership for continuous results

As a technology forward company, UPS knows they need to innovate every day. Easy expansion of IT capabilities, flexibility of resources and speed to value is key. That's why a Converged Infrastructure works so well. Importantly, it also frees up resources to power even more growth.

HP did all this with "strategic replacement"-taking the best of what UPS had, combining it with the best of what HP offers. Now new distribution centers can be set up in hours, not days, with no disruptive "rip and replace." Resources dedicated to the old process are now tackling other projects.

UPS Infrastructure. Converged.

UPS existing systems are available without interruption during the Converged Infrastructure implementation.

HP ProLiant Gen8 Server

UPS chose the HP ProLiant DL380, one of the newest Gen8 server series. Designed for application-driven workloads, the ProLiant Gen8 family will help-UPS get the most out of its specialized business software.

HP StoreOnce Backup

HP Backup and Recovery

UPS operates secure in the knowledge that powerful HP backup and recovery solutions are on the clock, around the clock. These include HP StoreOnce B6200 Backup, HP StoreOnce Catalyst Software and HP Data Protector Software. Their new redundant, secure, highly accessible storage and archiving platform delivers major cost-savings and greatly reduced data recovery times.

Software-defined Networking

Networking

The HP OpenFlow-enabled Edge 3500 switches will allow UPS to define its path as it decides to make the transition to a Software-Defined Network. The new hardware makes it much easier, all without the need for new hardware investments.
