Information about Hearing Aid Compatibility Ratings
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defines HAC for wireless devices in terms of two parameters (“M”/”T”). These ratings provide how the wireless device interacts with a hearing aid in microphone mode (“M”) and in telecoil mode (“T”). The ratings are not guaranteed. Results will vary depending on the user’s hearing aid and hearing loss. If your hearing aid is vulnerable to interference, you may not be able to use the rated wireless device successfully. Please consult with your hearing health professional and test the wireless device with your hearing aid to best evaluate for your personal needs.
The “M” rating measures the Radio Frequency emissions, which can interfere with hearing aids, and may cause an annoying or buzzing noise for the user. This is calculated at four levels, M1 through M4. The higher the “M” rating, the less RF interference the hearing aid encounters and the more favorable the wireless device. The ANSI C63.19 2011 standard requires a “M” rating of “M3” (or greater).
The “T” rating measures the acoustic coupling rate between the hearing aid and the wireless device. This coupling makes the hearing aid susceptible to unintentional magnetic emissions from the wireless devices that fall within the audio frequency band. This is calculated at four levels, T1 through T4. The higher the “T” rating the less unintentional magnetic emissions the hearing aid encounters from the wireless device. The ANSI C63.19 2011 standard requires a “T” rating of “T3” (or greater).
