Strengthening our communities and enabling
the sustainable development of society.
We are committed to empowering all people, wherever they are, to build a better, more prosperous life. By applying our technology, skills, and financial resources, and working in partnership with others, we’re helping foster quality education, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunity so people and communities can thrive.
Empowering refugees to build a better life
In June 2016, we announced expanding our commitment to refugees by opening new Learning Studios in Jordan and Lebanon. In addition, we are providing computing and printing technology and HP LIFE e-learning to two Lynke and Blue Rose Compass tech centers in Jordan and an International Medical Corps Livelihood Center program in Turkey.
We are working closely with the Digital Promise Global, the Global Business Coalition for Education, Microsoft and Intel to establish the new Learning Studios, which will tap a variety of hardware, software and teacher training services to prepare refugees for potential careers in technology.
The core curriculum will be supplemented by HP LIFE, a program of the HP Foundation. As part of this effort, we will support the creation of additional free online courses and curated content specifically designed to help refugees develop the skills and expertise necessary for freelancing and ecommerce.
Reinventing the quality of education in India
More than a billion people are offline in India, excluded from access to education, financing, employment opportunities, health and human services, government programs, and much more. We are working to change this dynamic for people in rural India, committing to develop 48 self-contained, IT-enabled digital inclusion and learning labs, called HP World on Wheels (HP WoW) to reach these underserved populations. HP WoW opens doors to digital literacy, education resources, IT skills development, access to common public services, and entrepreneurship training. The program is expected to serve about 6,400 Indian villages, impacting more than 15 million people in the next six years, with the first HP WoW digital inclusion and learning labs hitting the road by the end of 2016.
Each 20-seat, IT-enabled HP WoW digital inclusion and learning lab will be powered by 10 high-efficiency solar panels of 315 watts, and be equipped with HP computing and printing equipment, such as HP Thin Clients, an HP Workstation, and an HP OfficeJet all-in-one printer, as well as software suites and e-learning tools, like HP Classroom Manager and HP VideoBook. The program supports the Indian government’s flagship Digital India initiative, which boasts a vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
Our first effort to improve digital education in India or around the globe, HP Future Classroom, is delivering skills training to students and job seekers in India - all in a space the size of a shipping container. Each classroom is equipped with HP hardware supported by a suite of software solutions that students and teachers can also access at home, via the Internet. Worldwide, more than 600,000 people have tapped into HP Future Classroom programs for practical skills to land jobs and build businesses.
