Healthcare offers profound and far-reaching opportunities for social innovation. Millions worldwide go without basic services, and millions more are at risk because of inefficient health systems and inconsistent quality of care. HP is collaborating with leading health authorities to reinvent processes, modernize systems, and develop solutions that dramatically expand access, improve care, and save lives.

Many of the challenges hindering healthcare boil down to complexity. Despite decades of effort, information remains fragmented, isolated, and difficult—if not impossible—to retrieve, use, and share. Paper-based records limit the flow of information. And electronic systems are often islands of information, unable to work with others.

As a result, caregivers are left to duplicate efforts, wasting time and resources. Or they must make critical decisions without having a complete picture of a patient's history. We're working to break down barriers to information, applying our expertise and technology to fundamentally improve the way entire healthcare systems work.

HP is joining health experts from nongovernmental organizations, research institutions, enterprises, and governments in this effort. Together, we're focused on bringing existing solutions to underserved communities and creating new e-health solutions that advance lifesaving care and research.

To accelerate progress, we're constantly looking for ways to scale solutions and redeploy successful programs. For example, we're tapping mobile and cloud technologies to transform health services, and applying enterprise IT solutions to integrate healthcare systems. As a result of our work, vital test results are being delivered to remote clinics in days rather than weeks, caregivers can access and share patient information in the field, and people are using mobile phones to verify the authenticity of their medication.

HP is also partnering with a world-class medical center on pioneering research with the potential to transform the practice of medicine. We're pushing the boundaries of information technology to accelerate personalized care, which may one day allow clinicians to customize treatments based on a patient's DNA. These and other examples illustrate how we're expanding the role of technology from a tool for productivity into a force for improving society.
