HP Retirees

Random Hacks of Kindness

HP retirees are sharing their expertise and experience to make a difference in communities worldwide.

In 2009, HP launched the Silicon Valley Encore Fellows program, a partnership with the nonprofit Civic Ventures. The program awards six-month to yearlong fellowships to help retirees take the professional expertise they gained on the job into the nonprofit sector. As Encore Fellows, HP retirees apply their talents to projects ranging from after-school programs for low-income students to environmental organizations.

HP placed six retirees in the pilot program, and five participated in 2010. Program costs, including each fellow's $25,000 stipend, are covered by a combination of funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, HP, and other corporate and nonprofit sponsors.

Supported by $25,000 USD fellowships awarded through the HP Silicon Valley Encore Fellows program, HP retirees apply professional expertise to help causes ranging from after-school programs for low-income students to environmental organizations.

Retirees Leslye Louie and Lyle Hurst—with a combined 50 years of experience in marketing, sales, finance, operations, and business development at HP—took part in the pilot program. They worked with Partners in School Innovations, a nonprofit that helps low-performing urban public elementary schools make overall education and literacy programs better for all students. Leslye and Lyle's management insight and marketing expertise were invaluable to the organization, and Leslye also stepped in as interim executive director.

Along with providing top-notch expertise to organizations in need, the Encore Fellows program gives HP professionals a taste of what it's like to work in the nonprofit sector, where many will continue to contribute well beyond retirement.

Encore Fellow and former HP employee John Armstrong, who helped out at a nonprofit called Environmental Volunteers, sums up his experience this way: "It has been a great opportunity to make a difference in two areas that mean a great deal to me: education and the environment. I've made use of many of the skills I learned in my years at HP."

We applaud our retirees for their contributions, and we're proud of the inspiring contributions they're making every day.
