Department of Veterans Affairs Selects HP to Help Improve Operations, Healthcare Services
PALO ALTO, Calif. – HP Enterprise Services today announced a maximum value $543 million Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) Real-Time Location System (RTLS) contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to procure and deploy a management system that will assist in the automation and improvement of operations and veteran healthcare services.
The VA plans to enhance patient-centric healthcare while reducing program operational costs by standardizing clinical and business practices as well as monitoring IT services. Under the terms of the contract, HP will provide a set of nationally standardized RTLS solutions to the Veteran Health Administration (VHA) hospitals, clinics, offices and cemeteries to improve healthcare efficiency and the quality of veteran care.
The five-year RTLS contract will equip 152 medical centers in the 21 Veteran Integrated Service Networks (VISN) and seven Consolidated Medical Outpatient Pharmacy facilities with real-time location technologies to help identify, locate and monitor assets and supplies within and between facilities. This facility automation effort will serve to improve consistency of services, managerial decision support, utilization of equipment and staff, and customer satisfaction by decreasing operational costs, minimizing lost and misplaced items, reducing delays in patient care and increasing clinical efficiencies and staff productivity.
“The quality of veteran care and improving the delivery of our healthcare services are the driving forces behind implementing the RTLS solution,” said Kimberly Brayley, director, RTLS Project Management Office, Veteran Health Administration. “Leveraging state-of-the-art technology allows VA to decrease operational costs and increase efficiencies, satisfaction and quality healthcare delivery.”
As the prime contractor, HP will deliver multiple RTLS technologies including program management, operations planning, implementation management, hardware and software, and site readiness, which are expected to lead to increased utilization of equipment, clinical efficiency, staff productivity and, most importantly, improved patient care.
“The VA meets today’s federal healthcare requirements by providing an agile, flexible and innovative platform for improved operational performance and patient care,” said Marilyn Crouther, senior vice president and general manager, U.S. Public Sector, HP Enterprise Services. “With HP’s RTLS application and services, the VA is able to deliver patient-centric, high-quality healthcare to valued U.S. veterans.”
In support of the RTLS program, HP is collaborating with world-class partners, including small businesses such as CenTrak, Intelligent InSites and WaveMark, to perform development, integration, implementation, testing, training and support functions.
Under the RTLS VISN 11 contract awarded February 2012, RTLS implementations are nearly complete in two VISN 11 hospitals, another installation began in October, and three more are currently in progress. The final center is scheduled to go live this summer. Through the recently awarded national deployment contract, the HP team will augment these pre-existing RTLS installations.
