HP’s Fashion-meets-technology Design Challenge a First for Lifetime Television’s Hit Series “Project Runway”

Contestants use HP TouchSmart PCs with Intel processors to create unique fabric patterns for their designs

NEW YORK, March 25, 2010 -- HP introduced with Intel the next chapter in the fusion of fashion and technology with a special HP design challenge that aired on Lifetime Television’s hit show “Project Runway” tonight.

For the first time in the history of the series, contestants were challenged to create fabric patterns using HP TouchSmart PCs and then transform them into stunning garments.

HP TouchSmart PCs provided a natural interface and limitless creative options for the contestants to incorporate their signature styles into the most essential element of their final garments – the material. These design patterns were later printed onto fabric for constructing “looks” for the challenge.

“We’ve had a great collaboration between ‘Project Runway’ and HP this year that was exemplified by the HP design challenge episode,” said Lance Still, executive vice president of Promotions and Integrated Marketing at The Weinstein Company. “Technology is an important part of our everyday lives, and seeing it become such an essential aspect of the creative process is not only a first for ‘Project Runway,’ but also very exciting in terms of the fashion industry as a whole.”

In this special episode, world-renowned designer Vivienne Tam, who uses TouchSmart PCs throughout her own design process, joined Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia to judge the final looks. HP and Tam have been at the forefront of fusing fashion and technology. Last September, the two collaborated to create the new look in digital clutch chic – the HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam Edition, now available at www.hp.com/viviennetam.

Technology on the show

Used throughout this season of “Project Runway,” HP’s touch capabilities on its TouchSmart line of computers are some of the most advanced available to consumers today. HP TouchSmart PCs with the proven performance of Intel processors feature a sleek, award-winning design that integrates a stunning high-definition widescreen display with a multitouch-enabled screen.(1) Users can simply pinch, rotate, flip or drag a finger across the screen of the PC to create designs in a natural, intuitive way.

Season seven “Project Runway” designers also had the opportunity to unleash their creativity using versatile HP TouchSmart tm2 notebook PCs. The screen of the tm2 can be rotated around and converted to slate mode, morphing it into a sketchpad with digital pen. This allows the designers to draw, sketch and take notes with near limitless options for colors, brushes and effects.

The winning designer of season seven will receive a $50,000 prize package from HP and Intel to create, design and run his or her own business.
