How to Print with an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch

You can use your Apple iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to print to either your ePrint-enabled or non ePrint-enabled HP printer.

What is an ePrint-enabled printer?

An HP ePrint-enabled printer connects to the Internet via a wireless network, enabling mobile printing as well as the delivery of pre-formatted content from ePrintCenter. Many HP printers released in 2010 and later support mobile printing. Click here to view a list of ePrint-enabled printers.

If you have an ePrint-enabled printer, you have a range of options to choose from when you want to print from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. To see if your printer supports the following options, go to HP printers that support mobile printing.

Setting up ePrintSetting up ePrint

Follow these steps to set up ePrint on your HP printer.

Step one: Perform a product update

As part of setting up ePrint, HP recommends that update your printer to make sure that it has the most current functionality. If you recently updated your printer, or have automatic updates turned on, continue to the step to enable Web Services.

Follow these steps to update your printer, based on the model type.

  • Deskjet, Photosmart, and Officejet

For these printer models, obtain the firmware update through the printer control panel. Go to HP Customer Care, enter your product name, and then search for 'Getting product updates' to find the specific steps for your printer.

  • LaserJet

For LaserJet printers, obtain the firmware update by downloading it from the HP website, and then installing it on the computer to which the printer is connected.

  1. Go to HP Customer Care, and then type your product number in the window.

  2. Click Next. If necessary click your model in a list of similar products.

  3. Click Software & Driver Downloads.

  4. Select your operating system, and then click Next.

  5. Click the Plus sign (topic site plus sign) next to Firmware to view the firmware update.

    NOTE: If Firmware is not listed on the page, your printer is up to date. No further action is required.

  6. Click More info, review the download options and information, and then click Download.

  7. Browse to the folder where you saved the firmware download file, and then double-click the file to launch the HP Firmware Download Utility. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

    NOTE: If more than one firmware update is available, install all available updates.

Step two: Enable Web Services

Web Services must be enabled on your printer in order to use the ePrint service. If Web Services is disabled, ePrint will not work. Follow these steps to enable Web Services on your printer.

NOTE: For specific steps on enabling Web services for your particular printer, go to HP Customer Care, type your product in the search box, and then search for 'Getting Started with ePrint'.

  • Photosmart and Deskjet

Depending on the printer model, use the Enable Web Services option available under the Setup>Wireless>Web Services, or Setup>Web menus on the printer, or via the ePrint icon (control_panel_ePrint_icon) on the printer front panel home screen. When you enable Web Services, the product prints an information page that contains the printer code that you will use to register your HP product at HP ePrintCenter in the next step.

  • Officejet

Select Setup>Web Services Setup from the printer control panel. To enable Web Services, ensure that both ePrint and Apps are turned 'ON'. When you enable Web Services, the product prints an information page that contains the printer code that you will use to register your HP product at HP ePrintCenter in the next step.

  • LaserJet

Print a configuration page from your printer to locate the IP address. Open a Web browser and type the product IP address into the address line. The Embedded Web Server (EWS) opens. Click the HP Web Services tab. Select the option to enable Web Services. When you enable Web Services, the product prints an information page that contains the printer code that you will use to register your HP product at HP ePrintCenter in the next step.

Step three: Register at HP ePrintCenter

At HP ePrintCenter, you can manage your print jobs, browse apps, and change your ePrint settings. After you register at ePrintCenter, your HP printer's unique email address will be provided to you.

Follow these steps to register at ePrintCenter.

  1. Go to ePrintCenter, and then click Sign In.

  2. In the Sign In to ePrintCenter window, click Sign Up to create a new account.

  3. Enter your information in the text fields, and then click Sign Up. The Add a Printer to your Account window opens.

  4. In the Enter Printer Code text box, type the printer code found on the information page that you printed in the previous step.

  5. Click OK. The You have successfully added your printer window opens.

NOTE: Keep this window open, and then continue to the next step to customize your printer's email address (optional).

Step four: Customize your printer's email address (Optional)

The ePrint system generates a unique email address for your printer, but you can change this email address to one that is easier to remember.

Follow these steps to customize your printer's email address.

NOTE: If you do not want to customize the email address now, you can choose to customize it at any time. To customize the email address, go to the ePrintCenter Printers page, and then click Change next to your printer's email address.

  1. On the You have successfully added your printer window, click Setup. The Customize Printer Email Address window opens.

  2. Enter an email address in the dialog box. The email can be 6 to 30 characters, and can be a combination of letters, numbers, an underscore, and up to two dots.

  3. Click Check. The ePrintCenter system checks if the email address is available.

    • If the email address is available, click Save.

    • If the email address is not available, try to check for another email address, or click one of the suggested addresses, and then click Save.

Printing with ePrintPrinting with ePrint

Follow these steps to print from your Apple device to your HP ePrint-enabled printer.

  1. Make sure that your HP ePrint-enabled printer is turned on, is connected to your local wireless network, and has access to the Internet.

  1. On your Apple device, find the document or photo that you wish to print.

  1. Touch the Action icon (iOS_Action_icon) to display the menu options, and then touch Email photo, Email document, or similar options. The email program opens and attaches the image or document.

  2. Type your ePrint email address in the To: field.

  3. To change print option settings, go to ePrintCenter and log in to your account, click ePrint Settings, and then click the Print Options tab in the HP ePrint Settings window.

  4. Tap Send to send the print job. The print job prints to the main tray. If available, photos automatically print from the dedicated photo paper tray.

ePrint tips and additional information:

  • To print an email message that you received from someone else, open the message in the email application, select Forward email, type your ePrint email address in the To: field, and then touch or click Send to send the email.

  • The ePrint server does not accept email print jobs if you enter multiple email addresses in the To: or Cc: fields.

  • The ePrint server does not accept email messages sent from private domains.

  • Go to ePrintCenter, and then click Help for additional information on printing with ePrint.

AirPrintAirPrint

Apple's AirPrint lets you print over a shared private network from supported apps on your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch to your HP ePrint-enabled printer.

NOTE: Your Apple device must be running iOS 4.2 or later to use AirPrint. Not all features are compatible with all Apple devices. AirPrint and multitasking are available on iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch (third generation and later).

Step one: Perform a product update

Step two: Print with AirPrint

Follow these steps to print to an ePrint-enabled HP printer using AirPrint:

  1. Make sure that your printer is on, has paper loaded in the tray, and is connected to your local wireless network.

NOTE: To use AirPrint, the Apple device (iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch) and the HP product must be on the same 802.11 wireless network. AirPrint uses Bonjour, Apple's zero-configuration networking, to automatically discover the HP product over the local wireless network.

  1. In the app on your Apple device, tap the Action icon (iOS_Action_icon) to display the menu options.

  2. Tap Print from the drop-down menu to view a list of available printers.

  3. NOTE: Some apps do not support AirPrint. If Print does not display, you cannot print the document or image from that app.

  4. Select your HP printer from the drop-down menu and then tap Print.

AirPrint additional information:

  • Bluetooth, 3G, or public Wi-Fi hotspot connections are not supported. AirPrint is compatible only via a private 802.11 wireless network.

  • AirPrint is not a solution for Mac computers running the Mac OS operating system. AirPrint is compatible only with mobile devices running iOS 4.2 and later.

  • AirPrint is compatible only with HP products released in 2010 and later. AirPrint is not backwards-compatible with any older products, and there is no workaround to enable backwards-compatibility with older HP products.

  • A printer that is connected to the USB port of your Mac, PC, Airport Base Station, or Time Capsule is not supported.

Follow these steps to download and install the HP ePrint mobile app on your Apple device.

Step one: Download the HP ePrint mobile app

  1. On your Apple device, tap the App Store icon.

  2. Tap Search, and then search for 'HP ePrint'.

  3. Tap HP ePrint in the list of search results.

NOTE: Make sure that Hewlett Packard displays above the app name.

  1. Tap Free, and then tap Install App.

  2. If prompted, type your Apple ID password, and then tap OK. The app installs on your device. 

Step two: Print from your Apple device

Follow these steps to print with the HP ePrint mobile app.

NOTE: Before you begin, turn your printer on and load the appropriate paper in the tray. Additionally, make sure that both the printer and your Apple device are connected to the same local wireless network.

Printing photos 

  1. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint app.

  2. Tap Photos, and then tap Camera Roll or Photo Library.

  3. Tap a photo to open the Preview screen and make any edits.

  4. Tap Print to print the photo.

Printing documents

Choose one of the following methods to print a PDF, .txt, or Microsoft Office Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document from your mobile device.

Method one: Print a document from an email attachment 

  1. From your email account on your computer, attach the document that you want to print to an email message, and then send it to your email address.

  2. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint app.

  1. Tap Email, tap Inbox, and then tap the message with the attached document.

  2. At the bottom of the message tap the attachment to open it. 

  1. Tap Print.

Method two: Print from your document management app

Many Apple and third-party document management apps support printing with the HP ePrint mobile app. Follow these steps to print a document from a supported app. 

  1. Launch the document management app on your Apple device.

  2. Tap the Action icon (iOS_Action_icon), and then tap Open in.

  3. Tap HP ePrint, and then tap Print.

NOTE: If HPePrint does not display, you cannot print the document from that app.

 

Non ePrint-enabled printerNon ePrint-enabled printer

If you do not own an HP ePrint-enabled printer, don't worry. You still have options when you want to print from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch.

  2. If prompted, type your Apple ID password, and then tap OK. The app installs on your device. 

Step two: Print from your Apple device

Follow these steps to print with the HP ePrint mobile app.

NOTE: Before you begin, turn your printer on and load the appropriate paper in the tray. Additionally, make sure that both the printer and your Apple device are connected to the same local wireless network.

Printing photos 

  1. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint app.

  2. Tap Photos, and then tap Camera Roll or Photo Library.

  3. Tap a photo to open the Preview screen and make any edits.

  4. Tap Print to print the photo.

Printing documents

Choose one of the following methods to print a PDF, .txt, or Microsoft Office Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document from your mobile device.

Method one: Print a document from an email attachment 

  1. From your email account on your computer, attach the document that you want to print to an email message, and then send it to your email address.

  2. On your Apple device, tap the HP ePrint app.

  1. Tap Email, tap Inbox, and then tap the message with the attached document.

  2. At the bottom of the message tap the attachment to open it.

Method two: Print from your document management app

Many Apple and third-party document management apps support printing with the HP ePrint mobile app. Follow these steps to print a document from a supported app. 

  1. Launch the document management app on your Apple device.

  2. Tap the Action icon (iOS_Action_icon), and then tap Open in.

  3. Tap HP ePrint, and then tap Print.

NOTE: If HPePrint does not display, you cannot print the document from that app.

 

Google Cloud PrintGoogle Cloud Print

Follow these steps to set up Google Cloud Print and start printing to your HP classic printer. A classic printer does not support ePrint.

IMPORTANT: You must have the Google Chrome Web browser installed on your computer to use Google Cloud Print with a classic printer. Click here for information on downloading and installing Google Chrome.

  1. Go to Google Cloud Print, and then click Add a Classic printer.

  2. If prompted, sign in to Google with your Google/Gmail account information, and then follow the instructions to register your printer with Google Cloud Print. 

When your printer is registered, it is associated with your Google Account and connected to Google Cloud Print. Click here to view a list of apps that allow you to print to Google Cloud Print.
