Tested to extremes

HP’s media test facilities are in use seven days a week all year round, testing every single batch of product to extremes – so you don’t have to!

HP invests millions of dollars in quality control testing to make sure you never suffer the million dollar losses that are typical when data is lost or destroyed.

Here are some facts:

  • Before LTO-6 was launched, HP had already completed over half a million hours of testing and pulled over 500,000 miles of LTO-6 tape.
  • In 2011, we conducted over 2.6 million hours of quality control testing for HP LTO Ultrium branded media.
  • In a typical year, we use over 15,000 drives and 8,500 pieces of media
  • In 2011, we pulled over 150,000 miles of new LTO-4 and LTO-5 ‘green tape’ through HP and non-HP devices

HP storage media combines innovative design and manufacture with extreme reliability testing to make sure your backup and restore works flawlessly. Full volume archiving, environmental interchange, intensive automation read/write, severe load/unload, drop testing and transportation: just some of the continual procedures we run to ensure your data stays safe and sound. Our durability specifications are twice those required to meet industry standards and we test rigorously on non-HP devices as well as HP tape drives and automation hardware.

HP LTO Ultrium cartridges have been to the top of the world, dashed across the Sahara, cycled the length of the Americas and been transported to the depths of the Venezuelan rain forest. Unlike the intrepid athletes that have accompanied them, the data that we recorded on the tape returned unscathed. Every time.

Challenges don’t come much steeper.

At 7,800 metres, you face extremes of temperature and humidity that stretch your abilities to the limit. As British climbers Ben and Tom Clowes discovered during their ascent of Everest in Spring 2004.

But testing environments like these were nothing new to their companion: an HP Ultrium data cartridge, preloaded with data. After all, the HP Ultrium lab test programme notches up some 400,000 hours of physical torment a year. All in the name of data storage integrity of the highest order.

So, while the brothers emerged from their conquest a little worse for wear, the HP Ultrium cartridges remained, unsurprisingly, in peak condition. Which only goes to prove that if you need to stake your business on highly reliable data storage, you can’t top HP Ultrium.

HP Ultrium cartridges went from -40ºC to +56ºC without breaking into a sweat.

HP invests millions of dollars in extensive real-life reliability testing in its labs. But there’s no substitute for real world experience. If an HP branded Ultrium cartridge can take a brisk climb up the world’s highest, most fearsome peak, followed by a searing 230km run in the unforgiving heat and dust of the Sahara, it can probably withstand anything.

So having accompanied Tom Clowes and his brother Ben on their attempt to become the first British brothers to climb Mount Everest, Steve Backshall carried the same Ultrium 1 cartridge off to the other extreme – on a gruelling marathon across the Sahara desert.

We’ve gone through hell and high water to prove the integrity of HP Ultrium cartridges.

Taking part in the world’s most gruelling rowing race, 26 tiny boats set off on 1st December 2005 to tough it out over 5,000 km from San Sebastian de la Gomera in the Canaries to English Harbour in Antigua. That’s 49 days and 12 hours of almost non-stop rowing in appalling weather and sea conditions.

The ultimate gruelling challenge. Yet HP Ultrium came through it all. With 100% of the data unscathed and fully restorable at journey’s end. All of which proves one thing. Your data is ultra-safe on HP Ultrium. Come what may.

Venezuela 2011

Floating high above the Venezuelan rainforest, intrepid explorers, Tom and Ben Clowes, have a view that most of us can only dream about.

The endless sky is more blue. The earth stretches from horizon to horizon. But paramotoring is fraught with risk and every contingency has been anticipated and tested over and over again. Whether you are hovering a thousand feet up, or running a data centre, your survival could depend on successful backup. HP LTO-5 Ultrium tapes have been tested to extremes to ensure your data can be saved and restored successfully. Climate testing, drop testing, shock and vibration testing: HP is just as focused as Tom and Ben on leaving nothing to chance. So don’t take blue skies for granted. Choose HP LTO-5 data cartridges and ensure you always have a safe landing.
