HP Smart Meter Managed Service Delivers Flexible Pay-Per Meter Capability to Utility Industry

LONDON, U.K., Oct. 5, 2011 – HP today announced it has extended its managed service capabilities to offer a smart meter cloud service for the utility industry. This service underpins HP’s strategy to help utilities improve operational efficiency and accelerate transformation to a more customer- and service-centric delivery model.
HP has leveraged its extensive experience in the design and build of large scale smart meter solutions in Europe and North America to offer this capability as a service which will be charged on a pay per meter basis.
The service combines HP’s smart grid and operational network service management capabilities, HP’s expertise in managed services, and HP’s unique Software IP, HP Utility Center, together with third party software to offer a secure, flexible and cost-effective pay as you go service. It enables utilities to minimize the upfront investment required for a large scale roll-out of smart metering systems and reduces both risk and time-to-market.

“Utilities companies are looking to enter the growing smart energy market in a measured and cost effective way with minimal upfront investment and maximum flexibility,” said Craig Wilson, vice president, HP Enterprise Services, UK and Ireland. “HP’s extensive managed services capabilities combined with its software intellectual property, HP Utility Center, provide HP with the capabilities to help utilities companies move their applications to the cloud.”

HP Utility Center software is a flexible, scalable service oriented architecture (SOA) framework that addresses the service-management requirements of Smart Grids across a variety of assets, domains and technologies, such as smart meters. It ensures events and alarms are correlated and acted upon to ensure the reliability of the operational networks and the effective exploitation of operational and usage data for business value.

The HP Smart Meter Managed Service will start by being rolled out in the UK and will be priced on a per meter per annum basis.

HP’s premier client event, HP DISCOVER, takes place Nov. 29 - Dec. 1 in Vienna, Austria. The event showcases how organizations can get started on their Instant-On Enterprise journeys.
