HP Launches Security Initiative to Protect Consumer PCs

New security services and tools help put customers in control
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 30, 2004

HP today announced a PC Security initiative to protect consumers from viruses and spyware. The most comprehensive security awareness program offered among major PC manufacturers, the initiative delivers additional tools and support that consumers need to protect and clean their PCs.

Key elements of the initiative include:

  • dedicated, online security support with one-hour email response time and real-time chat at no charge;
  • live, virus alert classes held via phone during virus outbreaks at no charge;
  • the HP Help and Support Center with performance and security diagnostic software installed on notebooks.

Additional aspects of the PC Security initiative include awareness and education campaigns and special sales promotions for anti-virus and spyware protection software. The initiative is part of a broader HP commitment to security, also announced today.

"Our customers told us that viruses were their primary concern followed by hackers and identity protection," said Deborah Nelson, vice president of marketing, Personal System Group, HP. "We designed the PC Security initiative to give them what they need to keep their computers secure. HP takes its responsibility seriously to provide the best tools possible."

PC Security Center

A key component of the initiative is HP's PC Security Center website accessed through www.hp.com. Since the majority of consumers use the web to research computer-related security products and services, HP designed the new site to give consumers a one-stop shop for protecting their PCs.

During this holiday season, the site includes access to a dedicated e-mail and real-time chat response team that specializes in security. Customers can chat online with support agents in real time or e-mail their questions to HP and receive a response in an hour or less. These support options are available to customers both in and out of warranty at no additional charge.

HP has several online courses available via the PC Security Center. In October, nearly 1,300 consumers took HP's pilot course, "Be Safe Not Sorry, Protecting Your Data," which received a 95 percent approval rating. HP is now releasing its "Security Boot Camp" and "Protect Yourself from Spam and Spyware" courses. These courses help consumers make sure they have the right security in place and develop safe computing practices. Both courses enable students to e-mail instructors their specific questions or use the online community to solicit feedback.

Education and awareness

Because virus attacks can stop a computer from working, HP developed new phone services at no charge. When new virus outbreaks happen, customers can call HP toll free at +1 800 474 6836 (+1 800 HP invent) and sign up for a virus solution class by phone to identify ways to help rid their computer of viruses. The self-paced class is followed by a live Q&A session that runs from 6 a.m. to midnight MST. The classes will run in response to virus outbreaks and are not pre-scheduled.

In addition to the online and phone support, HP is delivering more services to educate consumers about security threats and give them tools to prevent attacks. HP began a security awareness campaign this summer reaching more than 9 million customers. The combination of the awareness campaign with the release of Microsoft Windows® Service Pack 2 has helped reduce security-related calls to HP's technical support agents by 20 percent from July to October.

Tools to protect and clean PCs

Since the vast majority of security problems disguise themselves as performance issues, HP added a new security check to the HP Help and Support Center's system check up. With one click, the notebook will run more than 30 diagnostics to check the overall health of the system and will alert the customer of a major virus threat that may be inhibiting performance. If there is a security threat, the Help and Support Center provides information that customers can use to help clean their notebooks. The service is available at no charge for as long as customers own the PC.

To help customers protect their PCs, HP has teamed with Symantec to create a special promotion for its customers. Now until December 30, HP customers can purchase Symantec's new Norton Internet Security 2005 and receive a copy of Norton Password Manager 2004 at no charge, a savings of $59.95. HP has included 60 days of complimentary live updates for Internet security software on its desktops and notebooks since 2003. In addition, HP installs Norton Personal Firewall 2004 to protect customers against aggressive worms, Trojans, hackers and other online threats that can harm data for as long as they own the PC.

Intermute is also offering a special promotion for HP customers. For a limited time, customers can purchase Spysubtract Pro at a 50 percent discount, a savings of $15. This augments the 30 day subscription that ships with new HP desktops and notebooks. Spysubtract is an anti-spyware program that helps remove software that tracks PC usage and Web surfing activities. Both promotions are available through the PC Security website.

The services and tools to help customers combat security threats are part of the HP Total Care portfolio of services. With HP Total Care, customers have more options for convenient support including eSupport options such as real-time chat with a support agent, diagnostic tools and driver downloads, as well as 24 hours a day, seven days a week toll-free technical support in both English and Spanish.
