HP Introduces Software That Allows Customers to Manage Impact of Change in Real Time

Adaptive Management Platform Supports Intelligent, Automatic Response, Optimizing Use of Infrastructure Resources

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today outlined its vision for adaptive management and introduced major extensions to its industry-leading HP OpenView software suite that automatically and dynamically respond to the unpredictable and constant changes in business IT environments.

HP's new Adaptive Management Platform enables customers to more efficiently use heterogeneous infrastructure resources in their enterprises, allowing them to experience significant gains in productivity and cost savings with their current assets. Industry research shows that customers may typically only use 20 to 35 percent of their available IT capacity. HP's solution offers the potential to increase usage rates to 75 percent and greater, maximizing an enterprise's return on spending.

"Businesses require an IT infrastructure that quickly adapts to change while meeting customers' needs, and in today's intensely competitive, global environment, managing this infrastructure has never been more critical," said Nora Denzel, senior vice president, HP Software Global Business Unit. "Today, HP is extending the reach of traditional management software to offer customers immediate knowledge of their changing business environments, so they can intelligently respond to unforeseen change, endure crises, seize opportunities and lead markets."

In addition to the Adaptive Management Platform, HP announced other enhancements to its HP OpenView and HP OpenCall product suites that help enterprise infrastructure managers, service providers and network equipment manufacturers provide better services at lower cost. "With HP's new offerings, we are able to build on our investment in the training and tools we have," said Brad Elliott, technology services manager, Maritime Life Assurance Company. "We have already cut our mean-time-to-repair from hours to minutes on the components monitored by HP OpenView. With the new OpenView adaptive management capabilities, we envision being able to be more proactive in identifying potential problems and automatically taking corrective action to avoid an outage."

Adaptive Management Delivers Dynamic Response

Current technology only allows companies to continuously monitor their computing infrastructure and respond accordingly when problems occur. HP's new software represents a major shift by augmenting this ability with new capabilities that enable intelligent responses, such as automatically adding or reallocating resources.

The Adaptive Management Platform extends the capabilities of HP OpenView service management software using the collected strengths of HP's systems-level management, high-availability solutions and virtualization offerings. It provides a comprehensive approach to IT management, including asset aggregation, virtualization, simplification, business process-infrastructure integration, Web services, mobility and security management.

HP's Adaptive Management Platform is at work today through the virtualization, utility controller and service management software within HP's Utility Data Center (UDC). By aggregating and virtualizing all of the resources within a data center (or even multiple data centers), including the servers, appliances, networks and storage, the UDC allows these resources to be shared and applied dynamically to any application at any time.

Utility controller software subsequently allocates resources rapidly within the UDC to specific workloads enabling users to design, configure and reassign data center resources with drag-and-drop simplicity in order to meet user requirements. Service management software assures that these resources are meeting or exceeding service-level expectations and automatically responds to continuously changing business demands to supply the required resources to deliver optimal business intelligence.

Over the next 18 months, the company plans to roll out significant new adaptive management platform solutions particularly in the areas of virtualization, automatic provisioning, business-level service level agreements, integration of business processes and operations, and in-depth service management.

New Product Details

As the only IT vendor with leading products in both the enterprise and service provider markets, HP introduced more than 30 new or expanded software capabilities that help reduce operational costs and improve productivity and return on investment for enterprises, service providers and network equipment providers.

Updated software for enterprises:

  • HP OpenView Network Node Manager 6.4 and Network Node Manager Extended Topology 2.0, the first network management product on the market with breakthrough intelligent diagnostic technology that enables customers to actively investigate the root cause of problems as well as predict potential problems with increased accuracy before they impact the service;
  • HP OpenView Web Service Management Engine, technology that will allow customers to provision Web services by intercepting SOAP and WSDL-based Web service transactions and actively manage the actual Web service, as opposed to managing the platform where a Web service resides;
  • New and enhanced HP OpenView Smart Plug-ins (SPIs) that offer in-depth management for the leading J2EE and .NET-based Web environments, including BEA's WebLogic Server, Microsoft's® .NET technologies and IBM's WebSphere. HP also is offering new SPIs for SOAP and UDDI servers and is delivering new OpenView capabilities that enable customers to better manage Web services within a Sun ONE environment; and
  • New Windows®-based operations management capabilities for managing both J2EE and .NET Web application servers. HP is the first major infrastructure management vendor to provide administration, migration and visualization of Microsoft's Active Directory Service and enhanced integration with HP's Insight Manager for even more comprehensive management of HP ProLiant servers.

Updated software for the telecommunications industry, includes:

  • HP OpenCall Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) Home Location Register , a computer-based, off-switch, centralized HLR for GSM, General Packet Radio Services, and Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service networks, enabling better performance and reduced costs;
  • HP OpenCall Personal Call Keeper, a network service that stores all incoming calls addressed to a cell phone and makes this information available when the user's phone is reactivated;
  • HP OpenView TeMIP, which integrates the pre-merger Compaq Telecommunications Management Information Platform with HP OpenView's product suite. This offering gives customers strategic insight into their combined voice and data telecommunications environment; and
  • HP OpenView Internet Usage Manager 4.1, which offers an interactive map of customers' distributed mediation systems and enables management of broadband networks.

Software Partners, Support Programs and Consulting Services

A comprehensive community of software partners and support programs complements HP's adaptive management strategy and product portfolio, while HP Services provides the expertise and support to design, build, integrate, manage and evolve customers' IT environments. Among the announcements today:

  • Extended support for developers by offering new options for users of the HP OpenCall developer services;
  • Enhanced customer care premier services, which help customers maximize their HP OpenView software investments;
  • Joint development initiatives, tools and training seminars to encourage the creation of manageable Web services; and
  • Addition of 21 new independent software vendors who have elected to join HP's solution alliance program since June 2002, which provides customers expanded OpenView capabilities in the areas of security, desktop and software configuration management, new platform support such as OpenVMS and HP NonStop computers and Windows application support.
