HP Announces Secure, Mobile Law Enforcement Solutions at California Police Chiefs Association Conference

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Feb. 8, 2005

HP today introduced several solutions it has developed for law enforcement customers worldwide that are designed to put critical information at the fingertips of first responders.

The necessity for rapid response, cross-agency collaboration and up-to-date, accurate information in the field means that law enforcement personnel and other first responders need technology solutions that enable them to work and access data within an increasingly virtual, mobile and digital world.

Addressing this need, HP is exhibiting solutions for law enforcement helicopters and patrol cars, HP Rugged Notebooks as well as an HP Digital Pen tailored for the law enforcement industry here at the 28th California Police Chiefs Association Conference, which runs from Feb 8-10.

"It is imperative that we provide first responders with innovative technology and solutions to stay one step ahead of the situation that is evolving, whether it's apprehending a suspect or helping the victims of natural disasters," said Jim Ganthier, worldwide director, Defense, Intelligence and Security solutions, HP. "It's equally important that the command-to-officer infrastructure be able to simultaneously access this data in real time. HP's close working relationships with first responders have allowed us to conduct field tests which have produced the technologies and solutions that meet their complex needs, those of their leadership and their agency partners."

HP and the Sacramento Police Department (SPD) have collaborated for more than five years to develop creative technology solutions that better enable officers to access critical data more securely, perform their jobs more effectively and ensure greater citizen safety.

Most recently, HP worked with the Sacramento Police Air Operations unit to re-design and upgrade a lightweight helicopter navigation computer solution and video display system. The SPD helicopters were also equipped with Broadcast Microwave Services video microwave transmission systems, which project live visual coverage of the events playing out below the aircraft to the pilot's monitor as well as monitors in patrol vehicles and the SPD's main headquarters.

HP also equipped the helicopters with customized HP Rugged Notebooks that offer a robust navigation mapping solution from MetaMap, vectoring pilots to a residence or location within the city or county. The rugged notebook technology from HP provides a dual display capability for special operations or training and can withstand the harsh vibration and temperatures of the helicopter.

In addition to enhancing the department's "eye in the sky," HP and SPD collaborated to transform the patrol car into a mobile office. Taking a comprehensive approach to the officer's work space, the patrol car solution provides police officers with the latest technology while also creating an ergonomically sound environment within the vehicle, making it easier for officers to access other equipment and easily exit the car.

"It became imperative to find a system that worked not only now, for all our needs, but also would take future technology requirements into account," said Sacramento Police Chief Albert Najera. "HP was the only company capable of delivering on all of our requirements."

The HP Digital Pen allows police officers to record and document accidents, traffic tickets and other types of reports at the scene of events and automatically integrate that data into a department's computer database. In addition to other events at the conference, HP will demonstrate the HP Digital Pen in two real-world situations: writing traffic tickets and filing a paramedic report.

Several companies also will be on hand in HP's booths at the conference, including L3 Communications with its computer system and dash-mounted display/keyboard used in HP's helicopter and patrol car solutions; MetaMap with its software mapping software used in HP's helicopter solution; and Raymar Technology, an HP reseller that recently expanded its services to include authorized distribution of the HP Digital Pen.

HP has worked with first responders worldwide - including, among others, those in Hong Kong, Brazil, England, Canada and Australia - to help provide solutions that are integrated, flexible, mobile, adaptable and secure. HP's first responder technology also benefits citizens by facilitating anywhere, anytime access to information and services, as well as decreasing the response times of those sworn to protect and serve.

A Premier conference sponsor, HP will be exhibiting in booths 427, 429 and 431.
