HP Labs Founding Director Barney Oliver to be Inducted Into National Inventors Hall of Fame

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 11, 2004

HP today announced that Barney Oliver, founding director of HP Labs and pioneering applied scientist, will be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Oliver was regarded by many - including HP co-founder Bill Hewlett - as one of the greatest applied scientists of the 20th century. During Oliver's 29-year tenure with the company (1952-1981), HP established itself as an icon of excellence in research and development and shaped the face of business in what became known as Silicon Valley.

HP's central research organization, HP Labs, was established by Oliver in 1966, and became the birthplace of a long list of now-legendary products emerging during the era. These included:

  • the HP 2116A, the company's first computer,
  • the HP 9100A, the first scientific desktop programmable calculator, and
  • the HP 35, the first scientific handheld calculator.

"We owe credit to Barney not only for some of the ingenious products that have become inseparable from our everyday lives, but also for the spirit of innovation that still pervades HP and HP Labs today," said Dick Lampman, senior vice president of research for HP and director of HP Labs. "We're proud to carry that spirit forward and are dedicated to focusing our research in areas where we can make the greatest contribution to our customers and to society."

Oliver also was well-known for his work at Bell Labs and SETI. Oliver passed away on Nov. 23, 1995.

The formal ceremony for Oliver and this year's other inductees will take place in May at the National Inventors Hall of Fame (www.invent.org) in Akron, Ohio.
