HP Provides $2.1 Million Technology Gift to Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund

Donation of products and services assists national effort to achieve educational parity at public historically black colleges and universities
PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 3, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) has given the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund a gift valued at more than $2.1 million. The donation of industry-standard HP ProLiant servers, notebook PCs and other technology and services will be used to improve educational opportunities for minority students by providing a world-class information systems infrastructure for the fund's 45 member public historically black colleges and universities.

HP technology will support member schools' e-mail services for student and faculty communications, a prioritized area of need identified by a majority of the 45 Thurgood Marshall academic institutions. Enhancing student and faculty communication is a vital underpinning to creating a successful learning environment.

"HP recognizes the responsibilities and the opportunities we have to help shape a better world," said Bess Stephens, vice president, Philanthropy and Education, HP. "Information technology can and should be a major vehicle for improving our students' educational and professional opportunities. HP's donation to the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund continues our long-standing commitment to equal opportunity in public education."

HP's gift also supports the fund's technology initiative, which is a multiyear effort to secure resources to ensure that its member schools' administrative staff, faculty and students are using the most current technology applications, hardware, networking systems and data communications.

"Our goal is to ensure that students attending public historically black colleges and universities have access to the latest technologies, which are critical to preparing college students to compete in an information society and a global marketplace," said Dwayne Ashley, president, Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. "HP's technology gift will help our 45 member schools to cross the digital divide and allows our member schools to more effectively compete with better endowed institutions in preparing their students to succeed in the 21st century workforce."

In addition to hardware products and installation services, HP is providing Microsoft Windows® technical software support services. This service provides problem identification and resolution, information services, and answers to point-specific questions on software deployment and installation.
