HP Delivers New and Enhanced Management for Cisco Network Environments

Enhanced Smart Way 2004 Program from HP Now Includes IP Telephony Management
CHICAGO, JUNE 16, 2003

At its annual Software Forum here, HP (NYSE:HPQ) unveiled an advanced network management program, called Smart Way 2004, offering HP OpenView enterprise IP telephony, network infrastructure and service management for Cisco Systems network environments.

HP and Cisco continue to collaborate on new and enhanced products to provide their mutual customers with total solutions for their needs. This complementary expertise, along with extensive compatibility and interoperability between the companies' products, results in enhanced management capabilities for enterprise customers. Specific benefits include enhanced infrastructure performance, real-time fault management and reduced costs.

Smart Way 2004 is the next generation of the HP OpenView Smart Way program. It includes three modular solutions: a new management solution for Cisco IP telephony environments; an enhanced network management solution; and an enhanced service management solution -- all of which are designed to reduce the complexity and improve the efficiency of managing advanced technology networks.

IP Telephony Management

Cisco and HP have jointly identified and fulfilled the network managebility requirements for successfully deploying IP telephony environments. As a result, Smart Way 2004 includes the first commercial solution in the industry to offer reporting capabilities specifically for anticipating loads on IP telephony networks and for managing capacity as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Now network administrators will be given diagnostics of impending capacity limitations that enable them to re-balance network loads using exisiting network resources and to grow more efficiently to meet increasing demands.

IP telephony management helps enterprises reduce costs by enabling better management of T1 lines and more efficient planning of resource acquisition for growing installations to ensure customers don't pay for more lines than they really need. New IP telephony management capabilities included in Smart Way 2004 are:

  • HP OpenView Performance Insight Report Pack for Cisco IP Telephony Statistics, a reporting solution for performance and capacity management which collects data from CiscoWorks Gateway Statistics Utility and generates useful, ready-to-run capacity planning reports.
  • Cisco's CiscoWorks™ Gateway Statistics Utility (GSU), an extension of CiscoWorks IP Telephony Environment Monitor that allows network management personnel to define and capture performance data about important elements of their IP networks. The GSU collects information from which HP OpenView is able to generate reports showing performance and behavior information for IP telephony gateways and call traffic.
  • The IP telephony management solution offers a Cisco platform-capable fault management and capacity management solution tailored specifically for IP telephony networks.

Network Management

In order to remain competitive, enterprises have a growing need for real-time infrastructure management. To address this need, HP is offering an enhanced Enterprise Infrastructure Management solution, which integrates CiscoWorks with the comprehensive HP OpenView network management offering, Network Node Manager 7.0 Advanced. The integrated offering provides customers a quick and effective way to manage performance and identify and manage faults on their network infrastructures.

Network Node Manager 7.0 Advanced is designed for networks requiring advanced management of switches and virtual local area networks (VLANS), sophisticated root-cause analysis and distributed management of large networks. The software includes expanded Cisco device coverage and intelligence, such as categorization of Cisco alarms and enhanced Cisco VLAN discovery.

The Enterprise Infrastructure Management solution provides simple management of heterogeneous and homogeneous IP environments. This streamlined level of manageability is achieved by using network maps of Cisco and other IP devices with single pane of glass management views and cross-launching to CiscoWorks.

Service Management

To resolve infrastructure problems before they affect business services as well as to facilitate the gathering and monitoring of critical business services on a Cisco network infrastructure, HP OpenVIew Smart Service Management for Cisco Environments ties network faults to business impacts and tunes the operation of an infrastructure to business metrics.

Customers get a graphic, service-level view with capabilities to provide diagnostic information on intelligent Cisco traps. As a result, IT administrators are empowered with the ability to quickly and easily identify problems, maintaining a high level of service availability.

As part of the Smart Way 2004 program, the HP Enterprise Services Management solution is being extended to include enhanced intelligence for Cisco devices, expanded Cisco device coverage and integration of additional HP OpenView Service Management capabilities.

Expansion of HP's support for Cisco environments is the latest in a series of successes related to the HP Adaptive Enterprise strategy, which allows customers to quickly and efficiently adapt their IT infrastructures to changing conditions in the market and customer demand.

In separate announcements today, HP further defined the evolutionary path for businesses demanding an intelligently managed adaptive enterprise and introduced more than 30 new and enhanced HP OpenView products, solutions and services.

Further, HP introduced enhanced integration capabilities, demonstrating the company's successful work with and through customers and partners to help end-users achieve their goals for achieving an adaptive enterprise.
