HP and Opsol Enable KDDI to Deliver Leading-edge Multimedia Messaging Services to Japanese Mobile Users

HP NonStop Servers and Opsol OmniMessaging Solution Provide Highly Reliable, Scalable Infrastructure for KDDI's Mobile Services
PALO ALTO and CAMPBELL, Calif., Feb. 27, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) and Opsol Integrators Inc. today announced that KDDI Corporation, the second largest telecommunications company in Japan, has selected the HP NonStop server and Opsol OmniMessaging solution to support the high-speed, high-volume data distribution of KDDI's next-generation mobile services, @Mail.

In Japan, where the number of mobile subscribers has skyrocketed to more than 70 million and where demand for cutting-edge multimedia messaging services is burgeoning, KDDI has emerged as the nationwide leader with some 17 million mobile subscribers. Multimedia messaging services consist of applications that require sophisticated e-mail delivery, such as movies, photos, music, chat, financial transactions, Internet gaming and global positioning services.

To handle the rapid increases in demand, KDDI required an infrastructure capable of supporting tens of millions of subscribers with absolute service availability, unlimited scalability and bulletproof data integrity. KDDI implemented a HP NonStop S-series server cluster totaling 120 processors and the Opsol OmniMessaging solution as the backbone platform for its mail and messaging services.

"As the nationwide leader in delivering next-generation mobile phone services, KDDI needed an infrastructure that would not only provide the industry's highest level of availability, but also be capable of growing seamlessly in response to our rapidly expanding customer base," said Yukio Takahashi, general manager, KDDI. "The combination of the HP NonStop server and the OmniMessaging solution has proven itself up to this task, and we believe that our future service expansion will display the real ability of this next-generation messaging platform. We then expect to deepen our relationship with the companies as our service expands even further."

The massively scalable and continuously available hardware and software fault-tolerant HP NonStop server and database environment has emerged as a preferred partner for the world's service and equipment providers. NonStop servers are deeply embedded in many network infrastructures performing the heavy lifting for tens of millions of wired and wireless telephone users. As one of the pioneers in off-switch "intelligent networking," the NonStop platform is also an industry leader in service control points and drives many core network-based solutions, including mobility management, home location register, fraud management and authentication.(1)

"Many of the world's mobile operators rely on HP NonStop servers to provide the industry's highest levels of system and application availability and scalability," said Pauline Nist, vice president and general manager, HP NonStop Enterprise Division. "The NonStop server's proven capabilities make it the ideal platform to host OmniMessaging and deliver the benefits of next-generation mobile services to KDDI's subscribers."

The HP NonStop server's adherence to open standards, coupled with OmniMessaging's support for a diversity of devices, browsers and cell phones using open standards, enables KDDI to integrate new applications and media formats quickly and transparently with minimal management complexity and expense.

"KDDI leveraged the flexibility in the Opsol OmniMessaging solution to build new multimedia solutions for millions of its cellular phone users," said Yash Kapadia, chief technology officer, Opsol Integrators Inc. "Opsol is targeting service providers worldwide as the adoption of next-generation mobile services takes hold across the globe. We see huge sales opportunities for the powerful combination of OmniMessaging and the HP NonStop server."

OmniMessaging is a high-performance e-mail messaging server providing streaming multimedia to cell phones and mobile devices. OmniMessaging consists of a powerful message store and supports the standard e-mail and mobile protocols. The solution provides a fully integrated universal mailbox with support for e-mail, voice, pictures and video. The messages can be accessed with mobile devices, a standard e-mail client or a Web browser.

OmniMessaging supports e-mail, voice messages and short message service alerts. In addition to the implementation at KDDI, OmniMessaging also supports multimedia messaging service and other standard messaging services. OmniMessaging is designed to support tens of millions of subscribers and was developed specifically to take advantage of the proven reliability, scalability and manageability of the HP NonStop server.

HP NonStop Server Advantages

KDDI and OmniMessaging leverage the NonStop server's highly scalable, modular architecture to seamlessly and rapidly respond to increases in subscribers and data processing by adding system capacity, including disks, processors and communications controllers, online without service interruptions.

The modular NonStop server architecture and fully integrated NonStop SQL database allows NonStop server customers to scale the system to more than 4,000 processors, with linear performance, a single system image and no application changes -- all providing customers with superb investment protection and a low total cost of ownership.

As a carrier-grade solution, the massively parallel, share-nothing NonStop server architecture and database environment also minimize planned system downtime by allowing for online system parameter changes, backups and database reorganization.

The architecture also nearly eliminates unplanned downtime by allowing for the loss of any single system component without the loss or corruption of a single e-mail message, reducing churn or customer defection and overall total cost of ownership.
