FirstEnergy Turns to HP for Centralized IT Services Management

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 15, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced that FirstEnergy Corp. selected HP OpenView service management software and HP Services to integrate and manage its business-critical networks, systems, databases and applications. HP's software solutions are designed to enable FirstEnergy to manage its infrastructure from a single console rather than a collection of individual devices.

Utilizing the consulting and integration capabilities of HP Services, FirstEnergy plans to implement HP OpenView Operations to manage its multi-platform infrastructure from an IT services perspective. As part of the planned implementation, network management, based on HP OpenView Network Node Manager, will be integrated and event and performance agents will be installed on approximately 300 UNIX® and 800 Windows® NT systems.

Additionally, HP OpenView Service Navigator is designed to help FirstEnergy visualize the infrastructure as a variety of services, enabling immediate root cause analysis of potential problems.

"Our strategy is to implement an integrated enterprise-wide management infrastructure to assist in the enablement of a strong IT service delivery mechanism," said Ernie Maley, enterprise director of infrastructure, FirstEnergy. "In order for us to align IT investments with the business direction, we need a complete view of the entire infrastructure from a single console."

After the initial implementation, HP OpenView Service Information Portal is to be deployed to provide FirstEnergy with the foundation for the development of an executive digital dashboard. The dashboard is designed to provide a customized view of a specific service that is important to a particular business unit. The improved information availability is intended to help FirstEnergy link its business and IT goals and objectives.

"In order to gain more value from its existing IT resources, FirstEnergy was in search of a solution that would offer a centralized point of management control," said Todd DeLaughter, vice president and general manager, HP OpenView Business Unit. "HP OpenView provides FirstEnergy with an integrated IT service management solution to manage the company's entire multi-platform infrastructure, and, as a result, to deliver the infrastructure insight First Energy needed to sustain optimal performance."
