New HP Compaq Thin Clients Offer Customers Enterprise-ready Computing Option

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 16, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today introduced two of the most affordable enterprise-class thin clients available from a major manufacturer. Powered by Microsoft Windows® CE .NET operating system, these additions to the award-winning HP Compaq t5000 series are the most affordable thin clients from HP.

The new HP Compaq thin clients t5300 and t5500 offer enterprise customers the simplicity, manageability and greater reliability needed for today's demanding corporate environments in a affordable, standards-based architecture. The devices feature proven PC-standard architecture, including the fastest processors available in a Microsoft Windows CE .NET-based thin client, and can be managed along with a corporation's PCs and servers with industry-leading Altiris manageability software.

"The affordability, reliability and manageability offered by these new thin clients make now the time enterprise customers should take a closer look at how a thin client computing model could increase technology return on investment for their company," Jeff Groudan, vice president of commercial desktop marketing, HP Personal Systems Group. "With new server-based computing models on the horizon, thin clients can be a cost-saving alternative to PCs for all or parts of an enterprise."

HP Compaq t5000 series thin clients are used with server-based computing in which most applications run on the server with all data stored on the corporate network. Thin clients are small, solid-state devices with no hard disk staging or complex image management. This allows them to be deployed in minutes for immediate productivity -- and at dramatically lower IT costs -- with greater reliability and security than standard PCs.

"HP Compaq thin clients t5300 and t5500 offer enterprise customers enhanced value and lower total cost of ownership for server-based computing deployments," said Scott Horn, director of marketing, embedded devices group, Microsoft Corp. "The Windows CE .NET 4.2 solution, for thin clients, enables high reliability, increased security, reduced costs and rapid deployment of the t5300 and t5500."

HP offers customers industry-standard Altiris deployment solution software bundled with every unit, for easy setup and maintenance of thin clients. Of major thin client manufacturers, only HP offers a single software solution that allows customers to manage thin clients, PCs and servers from the same management solution.

In addition, HP offers Citrix client software for Windows CE .NET, enabling t5300 and t5500 users to access applications running on Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Servers in a server-based computing environment. Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server software provides access to applications with thin client devices over the network, offering users centralized management capabilities for servers, applications, user licenses and printers.

"HP brings enterprise-class functionality to the new HP Compaq Thin Client t5300 and t5500 by integrating Citrix client software and providing customers the benefits of a true adaptive enterprise where users can securely access full-featured applications and minimize deployment and support costs," said Chris Fleck, senior director of global enterprise alliances, Citrix. "Citrix access infrastructure software and HP thin clients offer enterprise organizations cost-effective, secure, easy and instant access to applications running in a MetaFrame Presentation Server environment."

The HP Compaq t5300(1) and t5500(2) feature energy-efficient Transmeta Crusoe processors with low thermal output, allowing higher performance in a small design. Starting at an estimated U.S. street price of $379,(3) the HP Compaq t5500 features a 733-megahertz processor; 128-megabyte DDR SDRAM; ATI Rage XC graphics with eight megabytes of dedicated video memory for better multimedia; four USB ports, including one serial and one parallel port, and an optional PCI slot for added flexibility.

The HP Compaq t5300 is available with a 533-megahertz processor, 64-megabyte SDRAM and four USB ports. Priced starting at an estimated U.S.$349,(3) the t5300 is one of the most affordable, legacy-free CE .NET client from any major manufacturer.

The thin clients are available immediately direct from HP or through authorized resellers. More information about HP thin clients is available at http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/thinclients/.
