HP Chosen by Peralta Community College District to Network Campuses, Upgrade System

PALO ALTO, CALIF., MAY 29, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced an agreement with Peralta Community College District in Oakland, Calif. to provide consulting and integration services for the district's office and four campuses.

The Peralta Colleges - College of Alameda, Laney College, Merritt College and Vista Community College - are among the most diverse in the nation and serve more than 50,000 students each year in six California communities. Unfortunately, the district's computer system was out-of-date, limiting Peralta's ability to broaden online course offerings and optimize their business and technology resources.

"Peralta's primary purpose is to deliver quality education, whether in a traditional classroom or via the Web, but due to budgets and support limitations their computer system had not kept pace with the college's overall growth needs," said Mike Humke, director of higher education markets, HP Public Sector Organization. "They needed a more flexible system that provided better efficiencies and a reliable technology infrastructure to deliver the latest educational solutions, including video streaming, collaboration, and innovative Web-based learning."

The new network infrastructure, which includes a true converged network solution with data, video and voice all managed by the network, will help the Peralta District expand its information technology resources to make the education experience, particularly Web-based and e-learning activities, more interactive, personalized and engaging.

"California prides itself on technology development, state-of-the-art instructional equipment and classroom technologies that are key to learning and inspiring innovation," said Dr. Charles Taylor, senior vice chancellor for Finance and Administration at the Peralta Community College District.

"We demanded more from HP and got it. They are helping us build our network infrastructure so that our students can access the latest and greatest educational tools available," said Taylor. "We selected HP for their technical resources and management skills as well as for their 'can do' attitude that mirrors what we like to foster in our students."

Peralta offers hundreds of online classes, but access to web-based learning is especially important to Peralta's aviation school, where the majority of students are required to go online to gain FAA certifications.

The improved network infrastructure also will allow Peralta's instructors to deliver international, on-demand video training.

HP will provide project management and integration for the Peralta project as well as HP ProLiant DL380 servers. HP also has partnered with Cisco for software and other hardware solutions and CBX Technologies and E-paperless, two local firms, will assist with installation and start-up services.

"HP is uniquely qualified to design and implement technology solutions that help transform colleges into a 21st Century learning environment and keep them at the forefront of change," said Humke. "Peralta Community College District is committed to helping its students successfully pursue their academic and career goals. And HP is equally committed to providing the right technologies and services that make those goals a reality."
