HP Technology Supports Telecom Italia in High-speed Trial Services in Wi-Fi Hotspots

PALO ALTO, CALIF., AND NICE, FRANCE, MAY 21, 2003

HP (NYSE:HPQ) and Telecom Italia Domestic Wireline today announced that HP's Integrated Service Management (ISM) solution has been deployed to manage Telecom Italia trial services in Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) hotspots. Hotspots are specific locations where users enjoy high-speed access to network services.

Telecom Italia Domestic Wireline selected HP's industry-leading solution based on the comprehensive capabilities of HP OpenView software to manage the hotspot infrastructure and services. In addition, HP's expertise in both operations support systems (OSS) and information technology (IT) was an important factor. The HP ISM solution is for both Wi-Fi network management and service management.

Based on the TeleManagement Forum eTOM (electronic Telecom Operations Map) Model, the HP ISM solution enables Telecom Italia Domestic Wireline to reduce management costs and ensure high service quality by integrating the various management functions for network and IT operations.

Telecom Italia Domestic Wireline is currently testing services in Italy in more than 20 Wi-Fi hotspots. Services include broadband Internet surfing, e-mail, news, instant messaging and video streaming.

The HP OpenView software portfolio includes industry-leading tools for managing both the IP (Internet protocol) infrastructure and the IT environment (HP OpenView Operations, Network Node Manager, Service Activator, Internet Usage Manager and others).

This solution gives telecommunications operators the ability to better control and centralize network and service management and to improve their operational processes, which can lead to significant cost savings. Also, the ISM solution, with its modular, standards-based approach, gives operators the flexibility to adapt quickly to market changes.

"Telecom operators need to reduce costs and they are looking especially at their OSS environments," said Sebastiano Tevarotto, vice president and general manager, HP Network and Service Provider Business Unit. "With HP OpenView, HP has helped many operators streamline network and service management, and ultimately enhance their business agility.

"As an industry leader, Telecom Italia is among the first to trial Wi-Fi services in Italy and to leverage the full advantage of HP OpenView's ability to manage completely both IT and IP infrastructures," said Tevarotto.
