HP Announces Further Moves to Outsource PC Operations

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP) today announced it is planning additional outsourcing of its PC manufacturing facilities worldwide, in keeping with its longstanding strategy to decrease operations costs and improve profitability. This move will allow HP to take advantage of the flexibility and cost benefits associated with using non-dedicated factories.

Among the manufacturing facilities currently under consideration is the site in Isle d'Abeau, France. HP is in the process of consulting with the French workers council and intends to proceed with Sanmina-SCI as the potential buyer. Completion of the Isle d'Abeau transaction is subject to execution of definitive agreements, consultation of the workers council, approval, as necessary, of labor authorities, other governmental and regulatory authorities and approval of Sanmina-SCI's board of directors. HP also expects to implement outsourcing at certain sites in other geographic locations. HP began outsourcing PC manufacturing in 1993.

In the past decade, HP has consistently taken measures to ensure profitability in the PC market through increased operational efficiency, expanded build-to-customer-order capabilities and supply chain improvements. Outsourcing PC manufacturing allows HP to focus on strategic core competencies, including supply chain design, new product and services development, supplier management and customer relationship management.

The effort also is in line with a volume business initiative to establish strategic relationships with a small number of electronic manufacturing service providers and contract manufacturers around the world.

The outsourcing of HP's volume computing manufacturing has been planned and executed since 1993 and is independent of the proposed HP-Compaq merger.
