PanGo Networks and HP to Co-market Technology to Create Proximity-enabled Campuses

Companies Introduce Location-based Services Solutions for Higher Education Market at EDUCAUSE 2002
Atlanta, GA - October 1, 2002

PanGo Networks, a pioneer of location-based services software, and HP (NYSE: HPQ) will introduce technologies to allow colleges and universities to create proximity-enabled campuses. The companies will immediately begin co-marketing hardware and software that will allow institutions to deploy a wide range of location-based services over wireless local area networks (WLAN). WLANs are one of the fastest growing technologies at colleges and universities worldwide. WLANs allow students, faculty, administrators and facilities managers to access campus networks and the Internet from powerful handheld computers and laptops without a traditional Ethernet connection. Beyond the power of wireless connectivity, location-based services (LBS) technology from PanGo allows mobile users to access information that is specific to their location, personal interests and network access authorization. Guided campus tours, location-based dispatch, asset tracking and security applications are among the dozens of solutions that can be built on top of PanGo's Proximity Platform™.

Michael Campbell, President and CEO of PanGo Networks, will speak in multiple sessions from the HP booth (#1502) at EDUCAUSE 2002, the premier information technology conference for higher education, Oct.1-4 in Atlanta. According to Campbell, "LBS is the killer application that institutions have been searching for to help cost-justify the WLAN deployment. Wireless connectivity is just the beginning - context-specific, secure and personalized information access is an exciting network innovation. The asset management and workflow applications are truly a revolution in this industry."

The Proximity Platform allows campus network operators to detect the presence of mobile users and connected devices within smart spaces and launch services or push content over the WLAN based on this location data. The Proximity Platform and related LBS applications are optimized to run on HP servers, access point and mobile computing devices.

Besides allowing students, faculty and staff members to obtain information relevant to their location, a HP and PanGo proximity-enabled campus facilitates several third-party applications, including interactive guided campus tours for students and alumni, location-based dispatch for the physical plant workers and gaming applications.

Mike Humke, director of higher education markets, HP Public Sector Organization, said, "Collaboration on campus is what's driving the desire for wireless solutions. Students want to be able to interact with each other, the professors, the administration. This solution enables that in a way which improves campus life for everyone. In addition to being an innovative learning tool, it enables day-to-day campus activity to become more efficient, relevant and cost effective."
