HP Launches Initiatives to Transform the Mobile User Experience and Empower Service Providers

Announcements, Alliance withT-MotionEncompass Always-on Infrastructure, Mobile e-Services and Information Appliances

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) today announced a set of initiatives to advance the mobile user experience and empower service providers, furthering HP 's vision of mobility.

These initiatives include a mobile e-services architecture for third-generation (3G) network and service providers, an alliance with Siemens and an HP Jornada combining handheld and mobile phone functionality.

HP also is working with T-Motion, which delivers Internet services specially designed for mobile devices, to build a complete solution for the lifestyle portal's mobile users. In addition, HP has signed nine additional members to the HP Mobile e-Services Bazaar.

"We are moving on all fronts to make the HP vision of mobility real by building ecosystems to fuel the creation of new and useful e-services, providing always-on infrastructure to support them and manufacturing innovative appliances for their delivery," said Sebastiano Tevarotto, vice president and general manager, HP Network and Service Provider Business Unit. "Today's news goes a long way to empowering service providers with 3G mobile solutions, as well as transforming the mobile user experience."

HP and T-Motion to Develop Solutions and Services

As a first step in the relationship between the two companies, HP will manage the access, service delivery and service assurance features of T-Motion's UK-based mobile portal. HP will provide the infrastructure and managed service delivery needed to ensure that T-Motion's portal and services are always available to customers on the go.

In addition, HP and T-Motion are planning to feature the T-Motion portal as a bookmark loaded on future HP Jornadas. Finally, HP and T-Motion intend to work together to develop consumer friendly and relevant mobile e-services, in particular by leveraging emerging mobile technologies from HP Bazaar member companies and T-Motion's expertise in developing 3G applications.

Infrastructure: Mobile e-Services Architecture

HP 's end-to-end architecture, announced today, enables the seamless delivery of mobile e-services over 3G networks. It is designed to meet the high availability requirements of tomorrow's converging voice- and IP-based multimedia services.

In addition, the architecture will support the multiple billing methods required by next-generation services, such as content-based billing, and it will integrate a content converter that allows the deployment of mobile e-services over a full range of devices.

HP intends to deploy multiple 3G solutions using the mobile e-services architecture. These will be consolidated into the HP 3G solutions suite, a complete portfolio of solutions for 3G network and service providers.

Innovative e-Services: HP and Siemens; the HP Bazaar

HP and Siemens have established a consortium for the development of an open standard for e-speak-enabled mobile e-service payments. Among the co-founders of the consortium are several key members of the HP Bazaar, including Add2Phone, Digital Bridges, Match On Sports, Radiolinja, Spring Toys and Yomi Vision.

Nine additional companies have signed on to join the HP Mobile e-Services Bazaar, including Finansium, Future 121, Moom Solutions, MVION, ome-ics AG, opt(e)way, PeopleSoft, Republica and Sulake. A living lab for emerging mobile technologies, the HP Bazaar now has more than 300 member companies around the world.

Information Appliances: HP Jornada

In the appliances arena, HP today announced it is developing a General Packet Radio System (GPRS)-enabled HP Jornada that will combine the power of a superior personal digital assistant (PDA) with the voice capabilities of a mobile phone -- all in a single, sleek device.

Featuring Microsoft's® Pocket PC operating system and a built-in WAP browser, the HP Jornada will offer easy access to the Internet and converged voice and data services, combined with range of productivity enhancing features.

One of the first companies to offer this type of integrated device, HP is leveraging more than a decade's history in developing PDAs to deliver an excellent user experience.
