East Palo Alto Celebrates Community Milestones Achieved Through $5 Million HP Digital Village Program Grant

Mayor Duane Bay Proclaims 'HP Digital Village Day'

The East Palo Alto Digital Village is showcasing at an event here the community development milestones achieved through a $5 million grant awarded by Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP).

Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, East Palo Alto was named the kick-off site of the HP Digital Village program in April 2000. The program is a philanthropic initiative for selected underserved communities that draws from technology and a community's assets to solve pressing issues and fuel economic development. It illustrates HP's vision of e-Inclusion, a future in which all people have access to the social and economic opportunities of the digital age.

"East Palo Alto looks enthusiastically to a bright future because of partnerships with companies like HP, which has continued its commitment to helping us close the digital divide despite the economic downturn," said East Palo Alto Mayor Duane Bay. "I am pleased to proclaim today HP Digital Village Day."

East Palo Alto Digital Village projects to be highlighted at the event include:

  • One-to-one e-learning to advance educational achievement;
  • Small business development initiative supporting entrepreneurial growth;
  • Community network connecting city government, non-profit organizations, small businesses and city residents through an online portal and neighborhood-based hubs;
  • Community grants to fund community organizations needing IT assistance; and
  • Community Academy providing job training
"The East Palo Alto Digital Village is about working together to take the community from vision to action," said Janiece Evans-Page, HP e-Inclusion executive for the East Palo Alto Digital Village. "What has been significant for all of us is that we've pioneered a model for partnering between the public and private sectors and the community to achieve sustainable growth."

Attending the event are East Palo Alto Digital Village stakeholders and partners, city and school district officials, HP executives and Reverend Jesse Jackson.

The HP Digital Village program includes East Baltimore's Empowerment Zone and the Southern California Tribal Community, as well as three communities in France, Ghana and South Africa.

In March 2002, the HP Digital Village program received the prestigious World Information Technology and Services Alliance Excellence Award in the Digital Opportunity category. The award recognizes the HP Digital Village program as a model of community service and investment in digital opportunity.
