Frequently Asked Questions

How does HP Instant Ink work?

When you sign up for an HP Instant Ink plan, you pay a monthly fee to print a defined number of pages per month. The plans are based on the number of pages that you print, not on how many ink cartridges you use. Your monthly fee pays for ink, shipping, and recycling. If you do not print all of your plan pages in a month, you can roll over up to two times the number of pages per month in your plan. If you print more pages, there is an additional charge but you are still paying the same price per page as your base plan. For the $0 plan, only unused additional pages that were purchased roll over into the next month. Free pages do not roll over. A printed page counts the same whether it’s black and white, a color document, or a photo. Here are the plan options:

FREE
Pages per month: 15
Rollover pages total: Not applicable
Additional pages: Each additional set of 10 pages for just $1.00

$2.99
Pages per month: 50
Rollover pages total: Up to 100
Additional pages: Each additional set of 10 pages for just $1.00

$4.99
Pages per month: 100
Rollover pages total: Up to 200
Additional pages: Each additional set of 15 pages for just $1.00

$9.99
Pages per month: 300
Rollover pages total: Up to 600
Additional pages: Each additional set of 20 pages for just $1.00

$19.99
Pages per month: 700
Rollover pages total: Up to 1400
Additional pages: Each additional set of 20 pages for just $1.00

Applicable taxes, fees and surcharges by federal, state and local governments also apply.

There is no annual fee and you can cancel or change plans anytime without penalty. As part of the service, HP will send you HP Instant Ink replacement cartridges and postage-paid recycling envelopes, before you run out of ink, at no additional cost. Your billing month starts when you insert an HP Instant Ink cartridge in your enrolled printer.

Your printer tells us that you’re low on ink, so we will know when to send you more. You will always have ink when you need it. HP Instant Ink cartridges can only be used in the printer that you have enrolled. Used HP Instant Ink cartridges must be returned in the postage-paid recycling envelopes provided by HP. Returned cartridges will be recycled by HP Planet Partners.

Can I cancel or change my plan anytime?

Yes. You may cancel your service or change plans at any time without penalty. To change your plan or cancel your service, sign in at hpinstantink.com. Under My Account on the Home Screen, click Change Plan. You can choose to make a plan upgrade effective immediately and retroactively apply to the current billing cycle, or have the upgrade take effect the first day of the next billing cycle. Plan downgrade changes and cancellation are effective the first day of the next billing cycle. The $0 plan is an introductory offer and only available as a plan choice at enrollment. For more details, see the HP Instant Ink Terms of Service.

Will I get cartridges every month?

No, you will only get cartridges when your printer tells us you need them. HP Instant Ink cartridges are extra high capacity, and they contain months-worth of ink depending on your usage. You can print as much as you want as long as you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink.

What if I don't know how much I print?

You can start with any plan and change your plan at any time on your HP Instant Ink account page. To change your plan, sign in at hpinstantink.com. Under My Account on the Home Screen, click Change Plan. On this page you can view how many pages you have printed, how many rollover pages are available, and how many additional pages you have purchased. Cancellations and plan downgrades are effective after the last day of the current billing cycle. Plan upgrades are effective during the current or next billing cycle. The $0 plan is an introductory offer and only available as a plan choice at enrollment. See terms for full details.

Is my printer eligible for HP Instant Ink?

Currently, only select new HP printer models are eligible for HP Instant Ink. If you have an older HP printer, it is not compatible with the HP Instant Ink service.

  • Your printer must be connected to the Internet so we know when to send you ink. While enrolled with Instant Ink, your printer will also automatically receive and apply any necessary updates.
  • A valid email address
  • A valid payment method (for billing purposes)

What if my printing needs change from month to month?

Your unused pages are rolled over for you, up to two times your monthly plan amount. You can print more than your monthly page amount and still save. Additional sets of pages are automatically available and let you print beyond your monthly limit for pennies per page. You can also easily change your monthly plan whenever you want. You can choose to make a plan upgrade effective immediately and retroactively apply to the current billing cycle, or have the upgrade take effect the first day of the next billing cycle. Plan downgrade changes and cancellation are effective the first day of the next billing cycle. For more details, see the HP Instant Ink Terms of Service.

How will I know how much I print every month?

You can find out how many pages you have printed, how many rollover pages are available, and how many additional pages you have purchased by signing in at hpinstantink.com.

When does the billing cycle start?

Your billing cycle of approximately 30 days starts when you insert your first HP Instant Ink cartridge in your enrolled printer. You will be billed at the end of your billing cycle for your monthly paid plan fee and any additional pages you printed. However, if you are eligible for promotions, trials, and/or offers, billing and charges are based on the rules of the applied promotion. For example, for the free trial offered at printer setup, your service will begin immediately and the cartridges will start to work like HP Instant Ink cartridges right away, allowing you to keep track of your page counts after you enroll.

If you purchased an enrollment card in a retail store, your payment method will not be charged for the monthly fee that comes with the enrollment card. Your enrollment card fee does not include any additional pages that you print beyond the page amount in your plan.

When you enroll, we will send you a welcome kit with HP Instant Ink cartridges in about 10 days, so you’ll have ink when you need it.

When is my payment method charged for my HP Instant Ink service?

Your payment method is charged approximately 30 days after you insert your first HP Instant Ink cartridge in your enrolled printer. You are billed at the end of your billing cycle for the previous 30 days of service. You will be billed for your monthly paid plan fee, plus any additional pages you printed during your billing cycle. For the $0 plan, you will only incur charges if you print more than 15 pages in a month - additional sets of pages can be purchased as needed for $1 per 10 pages.

Since your monthly plan fee is the same every month, we will not send you a bill prior to charging your monthly fee, unless you print additional pages. When you print additional pages during your billing cycle, we will send you an email at the end of your billing cycle, listing your monthly fee and the charges for any additional sets of pages you printed. Remember to keep your printer connected to the Internet, so you can get notifications about your HP Instant Ink account.

You can also find your complete billing history by signing in at hpinstantink.com. To view your billing history, click on Account History in the account menu, and then click on Billing.

NOTE: If you are eligible for promotions, trials, and/or offers, billing and charges are based on the rules of the promotion that you have applied. For example, for the free trial offered at printer setup, your service will begin immediately and the cartridges will start to work like HP Instant Ink cartridges right away, allowing you to keep track of your page counts after you enroll. If you signed up using a prepaid card, any monthly charges will be deducted from your prepaid balance rather than a payment method on file, as long as there is sufficient balance.

When will HP send replacement cartridges?

HP will send replacement cartridges before you run out of ink. When your enrolled printer is connected to the Internet, HP will know when to send ink before you run low. Cartridges are sent using standard shipping, so they might take up to 10 days to arrive, however, HP will take shipping time and regular ink usage into account when it ships your replacement cartridges.

You will likely not receive cartridges every month, but you will always have ink when you need it.

Is the cost the same for photos, color, and black and white pages?

Yes, you can print full color photos, color documents, or high-quality black and white pages. Each page costs the same. Your monthly fee is based on the number of pages you print, not on the amount of ink you use. You never have to worry again about printing in black and white to avoid using your color ink cartridges.

How do rollover pages and additional pages work?

If you do not use all your plan pages in a month, the unused pages will be kept in your account as rollover pages. Your rollover pages are available as long as you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink. You can continue to roll over up to two times the number of pages in your monthly plan (for example, you can roll over up to 100 pages if you are enrolled in a 50 page plan). If you have printed all of the pages in your plan, and you have used all of your rollover pages, you can still print additional pages and save.

Additional pages are available in sets depending on your plan, for only $1.00, so you are still paying the same price per page as your monthly plan. As long as your printer is connected to the Internet, we will send you an email to remind you when you are near printing all of the pages in your plan. You can easily change your monthly plan whenever you want by signing in at hpinstantink.com. Expand the My Plan section and click Edit, next to HP Instant Ink Plan. Since you can choose to make a plan upgrade effective immediately and retroactively apply to the current billing cycle, you can always upgrade your plan rather than purchasing additional pages.
